Britain's Ballon d'Or winners
Clockwise from left: Denis Law; Bobby Charlton; Kevin Keegan; Michael Owen; George Best
British football came into its own in the 1960s, with England lifting the World Cup in 1966 and Celtic and Manchester United enjoying famous European Cup triumphs.

United's "Holy Trinity" of Denis Law (1964), Bobby Charlton (1966) and George Best (1968) all won the award.

The next Brit to rule Europe was Kevin Keegan, who claimed the prize in 1978 and 1979 while playing for Hamburg.

But it was a long wait for the next - and most recent - British winner with Michael Owen taking the trophy in 2001 after his goals helped Liverpool to five trophies in the calendar year.
