| English duo set new record Thompson and Atkins return to the pavilion Women's Test match, Lucknow, day two: England 1st innings 314; India 1st innings 21-0 (at close) England openers Caroline Atkins and Arran Thompson put their names in the record books with the highest opening partnership in the history of women's Test cricket. The pair shared a stand of 200 before Atkins was run out for 90. It beat the previous record of 178, set by Australians Belinda Clark and Belinda Haggett against India at Sydney a decade ago. England were 150 for nought at the start of play and they went past England's previous first wicket record, held by Enid Bakewell and Lynne Thomas, when the score reached 165. The two youngsters, both making only their third Test appearance, were together for seven and a half hours in total before Atkins' dismissal brought their partnership to an end. Thompson also failed to reach her century when she was bowled for 85 as three wickets went down without addition. "We were just really pleased to have that much time at the crease, and for us starting out as openers together, it's great for our development and learning. "It's given the team a great basis for this game and hopefully the future," said Atkins. Skipper Clare Connor scored 40 but there was little of substance from England's middle order as spinner Neeta David picked up four wickets, a fitting reward for 51 overs of sustained accuracy. Clare Taylor made a positive 27 before England were finally dismissed for 314, but neither she nor Lucy Pearson was able to achieve a breakthrough with the ball before the close.
