ICC Champions Trophy 2002: Rain ruins the final

Herschelle Gibbs (right) felt the heat in the semi-final, while umpire Steve Bucknor (left) shows his frustration as rain ruins both attempts to play the final, so Sri Lanka skipper Sanath Jayasuriya and India captain Sourav Ganguly (bottom right) have to share the Trophy

South Africa struggled to throw off their label of semi-final "chokers" as they threw away a strong positionwhile chasing a target of 261 against India.

The Proteas were 192-1 when centurion Herschelle Gibbs retired with heat exhaustion and they fell 10 runs short.

In the other semi-final, Sri Lanka skittled Australia for 162 and cruised home by seven wickets.

India were 14-0 chasing Sri Lanka's 244-5 in the final when rain came - but controversial tournament rules stated that a completely new game should be started on the reserve day.

The second game also fell foul of the weather soon after India's run chase had begun - so the Trophy was shared.
