Second Test, Hobart, day five: Australia 406 & 78-1 bt West Indies 149 & 334 by 9 wickets
Hussey scored the winning runs off Ramnaresh Sarwan |
Australia had few problems scoring the 78 needed on day five as they wrapped up a nine-wicket win over West Indies in the second Test to seal the series. The openers tied the scores before Matthew Hayden (46) embarrasingly gave his wicket away by top-edging Chris Gayle's half-volley to extra-cover.
But Mike Hussey followed up his maiden Test century with 31 not out, and hit the winning run off Ramnaresh Sarwan.
Australia are now 2-0 up with the last Test starting in Adelaide on Friday.
Hayden and Hussey had taken a business-like approach for most of the morning session until the former perished trying to hit part-time spinner Gayle out of the ground.
But by then he had passed the 1,000-run mark in Test cricket for a record fifth consecutive year.
Hussey was again composed, deservedly winning the Man of the Match award after his superb 137 in the first innings.
For Australia, who won the first Test in Brisbane by 379 runs, it was a fifth straight triumph in the Frank Worrell Trophy.
They have not lost a series against the Windies since Richie Richardson's team won in Australia in 1992-93.
The home side were always in control at the Bellerive Oval after dismissing the tourists for just 149 on day one and only a heroic 113 from Dwayne Bravo took the match into the fifth day.
