Matthew Hayden hit an unbeaten 87 as Australia defeated West Indies by seven wickets to complete a 3-0 series win.

The home side knocked off the 106 runs needed in 30 overs for the loss of Brad Hodge, who was caught at gully by Dwayne Smith off Daren Powell for 23.

But Mike Hussey (30) joined Hayden, who was voted man of the series, in a stand of 72 as the Australians reached 182-3 soon after lunch in Adelaide.

It was Australia's 12th win in their last 13 Tests against West Indies.

Brian Lara was named man of the match after scoring 226 in the first innings, during which he became Test cricket's leading run-scorer.

But for West Indies, it was another failure in Australia, where they have not won a Test match since 1992-93.

They began the final day without all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who took six wickets in Australia's first innings, and he suffered a thigh strain while batting on Monday.

Australia resumed on 76-2, Hayden making the most of a let-off on the fourth day when TV replays suggested he had edged a catch to the keeper.

The opener was soon into his stride, with Hodge looking solid in support.

The total had reached 110 when Smith produced a stunning catch to dismiss Hodge.

And West Indies could have picked up a second wicket when new batsman Hussey mistimed a shot which just eluded the fingers of Fidel Edwards.

But that proved to be their last chance.

Hussey claimed the winning runs, driving a ball from Ramnaresh Sarwan through the covers for four to bring the scores level and then nudging a single past point to end the game.
