West Indies lost their last seven wickets for just 30 runs as Australia seized control of the second Test on the opening day in Hobart.

Glenn McGrath took 4-31 and Brett Lee and Stuart MacGill picked up three wickets each as the tourists were all out for 149 in 68.3 overs.

Only Chris Gayle (56) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (39) resisted for long.

And Australia were 60-0 in reply at the close with Matthew Hayden 31 not out and Mike Hussey on 26.

Despite winning the opening Test by 379 runs, Australia made three changes with Brad Hodge, Andrew Symonds and MacGill replaced Simon Katich, injured Shane Watson and Nathan Bracken.

West Indies, by contrast, opted simply to try add depth to their batting by including all-rounder Dwayne Bravo at the expense of pace bowler Jermaine Lawson.

It was a move which did not pay off as Bravo managed only three, one of seven batsmen who failed to reach double figures.

Having chosen to bat first after winning the toss, West Indies soon lost Devon Smith and Ramnaresh Sarwan to the new ball.

There was more bad news when Gayle had to go off after suffering heart palpitations, which brought Brian Lara to the middle.

And although he survived until lunch, an inswinging yorker from Lee proved too hot for Lara following the re-start and he was lbw for 13.

Gayle was by then fit enough to resume his innings and he opted for aggression to try and lift some of the pressure on his team.

He hit two sixes off Shane Warne, who was cleared to play after suffering back problems earlier this week, and went on to reach a half century after being caught behind off a Symonds no-ball.

But after Chanderpaul had been caught by Hodge at short leg off MacGill, Gayle departed in the next over when he was deceived by a slower ball from McGrath and adjudged lbw.

The rest were swept away either side of the tea interval and the Australian openers tightened their side's grip on the game by playing out the 18 overs left in the day's play.
