Second Test, Colombo (SSC), day five: Sri Lanka 470 & 211-4d beat South Africa 189 & 179 by 313 runs Vaas bowled exceptionally well on the final day for Sri Lanka |
Sri Lanka clinched their maiden Test series victory over South Africa when they won the second Test in Colombo by a massive 313 runs on the final day.
Chaminda Vaas claimed superb figures of 6-29 as South Africa were bowled out in their second innings for 179 after being set a target of 493 to win.
Boeta Dippenaar and Mark Boucher posted half-centuries for the tourists but the rest of the batting order slumped.
The first match in the series of two Tests had ended in a draw.
Having lost almost the whole of the fourth day to rain, Sri Lanka would have been anxious about the weather on the fifth morning.

But they had nothing to worry about - and with South Africa resuming on a precarious position of 21-2 everything went with the home side early on. Within 25 deliveries, Sri Lanka struck three more times.
After Jacques Kallis was caught at second slip off Vaas for three, Graeme Smith was removed by the other seamer Lasith Malinga for 17 when hitting a pull into his thigh-pad and up to square leg.
Vaas then struck for the second time in the morning when removing Jacques Rudolph for a single, the batsman brainlessly top-edging a pull to long-leg.
Finally, South Africa got a partnership going as Dippenaar and Boucher resisted for more than two hours together.
Again, Vaas was the man to break through when having Boucher caught behind for 51, and the tail were soon blown away, leaving Dippenaar stuck on 59 not out. The end came when Malinga served up a slower ball to number 11 Nantie Hayward who could only drive the ball tamely straight back to the bowler.
Kumar Sangakkara was named man of the match for his first-innings double century, while Vaas was man of the series.
