Rain aids South Africa
Second Test, Colombo (SSC), day four (stumps):
Sri Lanka 470 & 211-4d v South Africa 189 & 21-2

We have a minimum 105 overs and are going to have to bowl really well to win"

Only eight overs of play were possible on day four of the final Sri Lanka v South Africa Test in Colombo.

When the cricket finally started after a four-and-a-half hour delay, Sri Lanka declared their second innings on 211-4, leading by a massive margin of 492.

The hosts quickly reduced South Africa to 21-2 in their second innings but after eight overs the rain returned.

If they do not force victory on Sunday, Sri Lanka will be criticised for not enforcing the follow-on.

South African captain Grame Smith had admitted he was surprised when opposite number Marvan Atappattu had not asked his team to bat again after they were dismissed for 189 on Friday, 281 runs behind.

Instead, Sri Lanka wasted 55 overs of precious time by electing to bat again - despite the uncertain weather forecast.

After the frustration of the rain, Sri Lanka's seamers were at least equal to the task in what little play was available on Saturday.

Herschelle Gibbs was undone by a rapid short ball from Lasith Malinga, which he could only steer to Thilan Samaraweera in a catching position just behind square on the leg-side.

Then Martin van Jaarsveld was bowled by Chaminda Vaas as he succumbed to a yorker having apparently expected a short-pitched delivery.

Sri Lanka: Marvan Atapattu (captain), Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath, Thilan Samaraweera, Upul Chandana, Romesh Kaluwitharana.

South Africa: Graeme Smith (captain), Jacques Kallis, Boeta Dippenaar, Martin van Jaarsveld, Jacques Rudolph, Herschelle Gibbs, Shaun Pollock, Mark Boucher, Makhaya Ntini, Nantie Hayward, Nicky Boje.
