Sri Lanka in total control
Second Test, Colombo (SSC), day three (stumps):
Sri Lanka 470 & 211-4 v South Africa 189

Sanath Jayasuriya
Left-armer Jayasuriya collected his second Test five-wicket haul

South Africa face an uphill struggle to salvage anything from the second Test against Sri Lanka after being bowled out for 189 in their first innings.

The visitors, who collapsed from 109-2, were not asked to bat again despite falling well below the follow-on mark.

At stumps on the third day, Graeme Smith's men trailed by 492 as Sri Lanka eased to 211-4 in their second innings.

Sanath Jayasuriya was the architect of the South Africa rout with figures of 5-34, his second Test five-wicket haul.

He was then an early casualty when stumped off the bowling of Nicky Boje for 19.

But half-centuries to both skipper Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara kept the home side firmly in control.

South Africa, resuming the day on 116-3, suffered a dramatic collapse starting with the loss of Smith for 65, caught and bowled by Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya soon added the scalp of Jacques Kallis (bowled), and after Jacques Rudolph was caught behind to Lasith Malinga the visitors limped to 186-6 at lunch.

Worse was to come after the break as South Africa lost their last four wickets for just three runs.

Rangana Herath did to the tail what Jayasuriya did to the top-order, plucking out Boeta Dippenaar, Shaun Pollock and Makhaya Ntini to return figures of 3-60.

The collapse was complete when Jayasuriya bowled last man Nantie Hayward to supplement his only previous five-wicket return against Zimbabwe in Galle in 2002.

The early loss of Jayasuriya after the decision not to enforce the follow-on was not ideal for Sri Lanka.

But Atapattu and Sangakkara remedied that relatively minor setback with a 96-run stand for the second wicket.

Kallis picked up two quick wickets when removing Sangakkara (caught) for 64, and Mahela Jayawardene, who had added 82 in the first innings to his double ton in the first Test, caught behind for three.

The unlikely figure of Rudolph then accounted for the home skipper, bowled for 72, but Tillakaratne Dilshan (23) and Thilan Samaraweera (21) remained unbeaten.

With a declaration sure to come early on Saturday, South Africa will do well to take this deciding Test into a fith day.
