Second ODI, Gwalior. India v Australia Tendulkar and Laxman put Australia to the sword with a fine partnership |
India spun their way to a convincing 37-run victory against Australia in the one-day match at Gwalior. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman both struck centuries as India racked up an imposing 283-5.
Adam Gilchrist cracked 83 and shared in an opening stand of 132 with Matthew Hayden during Australia's reply.
But the visitors failed to cope on a turning track and collapsed to 246-9.
Australia's inexperienced bowling attack struggled after stand-in India skipper Rahul Dravid won the toss and elected to bat first.
Sehwag fell in the first over, edging Nathan Bracken's third delivery to Hayden in the slips.
But Tendulkar hit an even 100, with nine fours and a six, as he notched his 35th ODI ton, and shared in a partnership of 191 with Laxman, who cracked nine boundaries in his 102.
 | It was a perfect wicket to bat on and I was striking the ball really well |
Bracken returned to dismiss Tendulkar just after he had reached three figures, but Laxman and Yuvraj Singh (44) then added another 64 runs in a flurry of boundaries.
Laxman backed up too far and was run out by Symonds and Bracken claimed his third wicket with the last ball of the innings to end a breezy knock from Ajit Agarkar.
Gilchrist and Hayden batted cleverly and ran well between the wickets with boundaries hard to come by early on in their reply.
Gilchrist looked set to notch up a century but was bowled trying to whip a straight Zaheer Khan delivery over midwicket and Ricky Ponting gifted Anil Kumble a return catch after scoring two.
Kumble then struck again, having Hayden stumped, and Zaheer trapped Andrew Symonds lbw.
Sehwag bowled Damien Martyn and Michael Bevan in the same over and Harvey had his stumps pinned back by Tendulkar as Australia's batting fell apart.
Brad Hogg (29) and Andy Bichel (14) revived Australia's hopes with 40-run partnership.

But Parthiv Patel completed his second smart stumping to remove Hogg off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer claimed his third wicket by removing Brad Williams.
The result provided India with minor recompense after they were beaten in the World Cup final by Australia earlier this year.
The next match in the triangular series is between Australia and New Zealand in Faridabad on Wednesday.
