The Isle of Man trio together with injured team-mate Joe Smith |
Manx gymnast Alex Hedges has qualified for the men's individual all around final at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Monday. Despite losing Joe Smith through serious injury, the Manx squad all exceeded their pre-Games expectations. The top 24 individuals in the team event qualified for Wednesday's final with Hedges finishing 21st. "I had a really solid day and I've done what I needed to do. Now it's back in the gym to prepare," he said. When Smith was forced to withdraw, the remaining trio knew they would have a tough task to perform against teams of five. Mukunda Measuria also produced an excellent display and he was rewarded with a reserve spot in the final alongside Hedges. | It was tough to watch, but I wanted to be here. "I'm not really thinking about that," said Measuria. "It's just a great relief to get today over. I'll find out tomorrow if I'm in the final." Meanwhile Adam Hedges, who is competing in the team event with his brother Alex, was enthusiastic about his biggest ever competition. "I missed a couple of landings, but didn't let it affect me," he said. "It is great to have achieved what we set out to as a team." Despite missing out through injury Smith was delighted to see the team perform so well. "It was tough to watch, but I wanted to be here. I was really happy to see the boys excel on such a big stage," he said.
