The bench certainly did that.... again!

It was high risk though as the All Blacks did go 12-0 up. Steve Borthwick remained calm and brought the bench on at the right time.

Lots of praise goes to the bench, but the starters this time had England in pole position.

An incredibly exciting team to watch, yet you wouldn't say the display today or any of the fixtures this series was inspiring, it's strange, we are playing pragmatic, not losing our heads, and trusting the time and bench to do what they do… love it.

In Dunedin, England were two points ahead after 60 minutes. At Eden Park at the same point they were four clear. At Twickenham, the lead was eight.

They lost all three of those games against New Zealand in 2024.

The final quarter is now England's quarter.

All Blacks head coach Scott Robinson, speaking to BBC Sport: "England took their opportunities and we didn't. They played some good rugby and put the pressure on.

"They got a couple of drop-goals and got momentum off the back of that.

"We played some really good rugby but we didn't capitalise enough.

"We are pretty disappointed but we will get hungry again to make sure we finish off our tour proud."

England try-scorer Sam Underhill, speaking to TNT Sports: "We were expecting a fast start, that's something you always get against New Zealand. The pleasing for us is we stuck to our plan and we didn't get affected by it.

"New Zealand are a great team but we didn't want to big them up too much. We wanted to go at them, especially with ball in hand. As the game went on, we grew into it.

"You talk about having a plan before a game and to stick to it under pressure is another thing. We stuck to our principles and our basics and you can't be happier than with a win."

More from England fly-half George Ford: "I didn't think about last year, I just wanted to do my job as well as I could this week for the team.

"I will always believe in myself. Every session counts and every meeting counts. I do believe in myself and the squad.

"I do believe I am getting better. I feel really good physically and when you do, you can can attack every day."

    England Rugby

England fly-half George Ford, speaking to BBC Sport: "I loved that. What a Test match. The most pleasing thing is that at 12-0 we can stuck to our guns.

"We knew if we started the second half with the bench coming on then we were in a good position.

"Even with 15 minutes left, we ended up on our own line with a yellow card, so we had challenges there as well.

"I think that is what Test rugby is, who can deal with those moments the best.

"The drop-goals were always in the plan and Steve is such an incredible coach that he is always in my ear about it, and rightly so because three points is valuable."

  17. 'We're building and we've got so much in us still'published at 17:22 GMT 15 November 2025

    FT: England 33-19 New Zealand

    England Rugby

England scrum-half Alex Mitchell, speaking to TNT Sports: "It feels fantastic. Just coming into the stadium, the fans gave us that boost. They were extra loud today.

"We found a way to get a win. Going 12 points down, it's always tough to do that against quality opposition. But we found a way, we dug in and got a result. We're buzzing.

"To have someone like George Ford outside me makes the job so easy. He gets into the pocket and puts us in the right positions. The little things he does that a lot of people don't see, like the talking off the ball, he's fantastic. He's the best in the world at the drop-goal game. It's been fantastic to play alongside that today.

"We had to appreciate we had quality opposition coming up and we know New Zealand are one of the best. To get the confidence to beat sides like this and hopefully go four from four in the autumn internationals is massive. We're building and we've got so much in us still."

Player of the match George Ford, speaking to TNT Sports: "I loved it, it was a challenging game. We went 12-0 down and came back well. We became a bit inaccurate so we had to work a few things out and the boys did that really well.

"We are big on trying to be calm and composed and give the right messages to the lads. We stuck to our plan and managed to go in at half-time 11-12."

On his drop-goals: "The drop-goals were always part of the plan. You want to come away with something and a drop-goal was the best way to do it.

"The bench are brilliant but it is not just the 23 today."
