Well, that's it from a thriller in Cardiff where Wales sneaked victory in their second autumn international.

Japan will feel that they should have enjoyed a famous victory that would have lifted them above Wales in the world rankings.

Tries by wing Kippei Ishida and number eight Faulua Makisi plus 13 points from fly-half Seungsin Lee put them within sight of a major scalp.

However, Jarrod Evans stayed calm just minutes after coming off the bench to slot the winner from the kicking tee.

Wales scored tries through fly-half Dan Edwards, wing Louis Rees-Zammit and centre Nick Tompkins, all converted by Edwards, but it's the Harlequins playmaker who will be the toast of Cardiff this evening.

Wales have the first win of the Steve Tandy era and ended a 10-Test losing streak at Principality Stadium that went back to the World Cup warm-up win against England in 2023.

Huge relief but it promises to be a tough end to November on that evidence.

Next week they face a New Zealand side smarting from defeat to England and then they host world champions South Africa when Tandy will be without his players that are with clubs in England and France.

Join us for those fixtures as Wales hunt performances that suggest they can be tougher opposition in the Six Nations.

Wales head coach Steve Tandy speaking to S4C: "Credit to Japan, I thought the way they played was really impressive, but I was disappointed with some of our performance.

"I said before, I wanted a better performance than we did last week, I don't think we got that.

"I thought there were some aspects of the game - the drives and the way we managed the game towards the back end - but I thought we didn't capitalise on them going down to two yellow cards. We didn't go forward and I don't think we were accurate enough in those periods.

"I love working with this group, they are class to work with, I know there's inexperience in certain parts, but we do expect more."

  3. I couldn't watch - Wales captain Lakepublished at 19:51 GMT 15 November 2025

    FT: Wales 24-23 Japan

Wales captain Dewi Lake speaking to S4C: "It's a huge relief. The crowd here deserved to have something like that to watch.

"To be honest I wasn't watching the game when I was on the bench, my head was down, I couldn't watch. I'm so proud of the boys, they've shown great toughness, and they built from last week's performance.

"Our target is to keep building on our foundations. We want to play the best teams in the world, we want to be back at the top of the world, and we need to play the best teams to do that.

"To me our accuracy in the 22 needs to be better. There was plenty of instances in the first-half where we weren't ruthless enough, we create opportunity's we just need to take them now."

Dan Edwards speaking to S4C: "That was a tough game, we made it hard for ourselves.

"Full credit to Jarrod Evans, that wasn't an easy kick.

"It was a fast game, we knew they wanted to play quick, but it was a great game.

"It was a bit of a mess in the air, that's the way the game is now. When we were in their 22 we were very clinical."This will give us confidence, but it's true 'winning is a habit' and we need to make that a habit from here."

The relief for Wales will be huge.

This was the must-win game of the autumn and they burgled the spoils from Japan, who will be rueing that late penalty against Harry Hockings.

Wales had to play from deep to escape their half in the closing stages before that penalty.

That set up the chance for Jarrod Evans to be the last-gasp hero.

Wales needed that because it's going to be VERY tough over the next two Saturdays against New Zealand and South Africa.

  8. Full-time: Wales 24-23 Japanpublished at 19:35 GMT 15 November 2025

Wales snatch it at the death thanks to Jarrod Evans' kick at the death.

They have the first win of the Steve Tandy era and they end a 10-Test losing streak in Cardiff.

The head coach swiftly leaves his box, with WRU head of performance Dave Reddin waiting by the door to congratulate him.

Japan are stunned - they probably deserved to win that. They won't leapfrog Wales in the world rankings.
