Italy might just be on for their best showing at a Six Nations, at least that's the mood after they outplayed Scotland in an 18-15 win in Rome.

Is Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend now a man under serious pressure?

Meanwhile, England have laid down a marker as one of the teams to beat with a crushing 48-7 win over Wales in which George Ford starred and Henry Arundell scored a hat-trick.

Wales looked off the pace and paid for their ill-discipline having been reduced to 13 men at one point in the first half.

"When we have come away we have spoken hard about our discipline being better and to come away today with four yellow cards, it's disappointing. I am disappointed in the way we didn't get in the game when we got close to the 22 it was accurate enough.

"We have to build the pressure, when we did get that one chance, England conceded a yellow card and we did get that score. We have to be more ruthless and build pressure in possession. I am bitterly disappointed with some of the game."

Wales captain Dewi Lake speaking to S4C: "We talked at the end of the game that we let ourselves down today, we let people at home down and we let each other down.

"We talked about discipline, we talked about being first in the breakdown and we didn't do it today. There's no point just talking about things we need to action them on the field.

"Our discipline in the first twenty minutes, we were down to 13 men for nearly 30 minutes, against a team like England that's going to be hard. We created opportunities in the first-half but there was a lack of accuracy. It's hard to come back from 29-0 down.

"England have improved since last year. The players they have, they bought on five Lions from the bench, they're doing so well at the moment, they're won of the form teams in the world. We're better than what we showed today."

England head coach Steve Borthwick was delighted with his side's intensity from the beginning of the match and their defensive quality,

Wales head coach Steve Tandy speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We have to go back, there is a young group around us. We know what we want to do but there will be ups and downs as we go along.

"I think we learnt a lot from the autumn internationals and I thought we would come in and implement that a bit more today. Ultimately we are in this together and it is about building to the next period of time.

"We didn't have moments in the game to build momentum."

England obliterated Wales in the first half. They were just relentless. It was ruthless and they had all the momentum.

Wales did not have a sniff but fair play they came back a little bit in the second half but by then the game was gone.

That is a brilliant start for England and they can go to Murrayfield with a spring in their step.

"If you look at the game they played here last year, they also kicked a huge amount of contestable kicks. A mammoth amount. That's the gameplan, that's the model they've tended to use over the last few years. Going up to Murrayfield, I expect Scotland to use that gameplan.

"We got the result we wanted today, that's all we're focused on. Now our focus will shift from tomorrow onwards to Scotland next weekend."

England head coach Steve Borthwick to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm pleased with the start of the game. The players started with a great mindset and to start the championship with that kind of result, we're very pleased.

"I thought we defended exceptionally well, we kicked really well and we scored some nice tries, but I think we left a lot out there on the grass. We'll review this game and say there's a load of things we could do a lot better. Those are the things we need to step up next week.

"Second half we were in the 22 a lot but didn't come away with points on as many occasions as we'd have liked. But I'm really pleased with so many elements of the game.

"You start looking at that Wales team, how dangerous they are on the edges, with how much pace they have. I'm really pleased that we shut down how good they are on the edges with our defence.

"You need to make sure your intensity is high. We'll review the second half and look at the opportunities we haven't taken. There were periods in the second half where we let the game get slow, and that's not the way we want to play."

Wales winger Josh Adams speaking to S4C: "We're very disappointed, some things we did well, a couple of balls in the air got us into England's 22, but we weren't good enough on the ball.

"England fought more than us, they were harder in the tackle than us, the rugby they played was beautiful, and their passing was great and it was hard for us.

"You play teams like England, the way they're playing, it's hard enough with 15 players on the pitch, so with yellow card after yellow card it's impossible to stay in the game and the pressure keeps piling.

"It's really important for us older players to be a role model when things like this happen. We need to try and keeps the spirits high. We've got four more games, we're back at home next week and we need to be better next week, we need to be in a game next week."

Playing against a hurt Scotland at Murrayfield next weekend will be significantly different.

England will have to take all the good things from today and super-charge it because Scotland will bring a lot more than Wales.

The Calcutta Cup game could be one for the ages.

England's Ben Earl speaking to BBC 5 Live: "It was a lot of fun and it is great being back at home. The fans were amazing and the boys were amazing. We had a game plan and I thought we carried it out very well.

"We were very mature.

"We are trying to improve regardless of who we play. You talk about mental intensity and those are the games that test us more, where the games can been seen as done in the first 50 minutes but it is what you can do in the last 30 minutes.

"We know we have a massive challenge next week, we have a couple of bits to sort out there.

"It's important to win, to get used to winning and it's important to perform now. We need to right some wrongs and we haven't won in Murray field in years."

Ben Earl's correct. England haven't won in Scotland since 2020.

In fact, England have only won two of their past eight meetings with their Calcutta Cup opponents (six five wins and one draw)

The pair face off in Edinburgh next Saturday.

England number eight Ben Earl speaking to S4C: "We thought if we put our best stuff out there the result would take care of itself. I think the scoreline flattered us. In the second half I thought Wales were a lot better and they played the game they wanted to play.

"We were very good in the first half and it meant the result was taken care of with half an hour to play.

"I think we're starting to see an England team that has a signature performance, has an identity, and for the most part we saw that today.

"I don't think we've won at Murrayfield since 2020, they're a bit of a bogey-team. Last year against Scotland it came down to last kick of the game, but I feel like we've improved since that week, but they're a good team and will be firing if they lost today. I'm looking forward to it."

England's Tommy Freeman speaking to BBC 5 Live: "The boys did well and there is loads to work on. We will tighten things up and go next week.

"I think there were a few connection issues still and we could have got the ball more in the corner, we did that better in the second half. It's about that communication and how we get messages across.

"It's professional rugby, it is hard work and it is a physical game, the lungs and legs start kicking in. You have to have mentality stay in it."

On scoring a try: "It's brilliant getting over the line, in front of these guys. I just focus on doing my thing and hopefully there are many more to come.

"I am enjoying playing centre, hopefully I can do it in weeks to come."
