Former Manchester City defender on Football Focus

James Milner loves the game and wants to make a difference for his side. He was a joy to play with and be pals with.

People say he's just doing this for the appearances and the record but no he's doing it because he loves the game.

The fact he is still as relevant today as what he was in 2002, which was a very different time in football. I'm immensely proud to see that he has got that record.

I played with Gareth Barry as well and people probably wouldn't say they are the best player in the side but for a lot of their career they have been the most important.

  3. 'I think it’s a poor addition to the game'published at 12:24 GMT

    Brighton v Liverpool (12:30 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on 5 Live

I think it’s [VAR] the worst thing that has been introduced to the game. I think it has ruined it. It’s ruined the enjoyment in stadiums. I think it’s ruined it for referees to officiate. I think that it’s a little bit of a safety blanket every time they referee.

You talked about Brighton winning four out of five, they should have got a draw against Arsenal, and, PGMOL have come out and said they made a mistake and Brighton should have had a penalty. So VAR isn’t perfect, it isn’t great, it makes mistakes and it’s still subjective which is a huge problem, and I just think it’s a poor addition to the game.

  4. 'How on earth do you not give another one'published at 12:20 GMT

    Brighton v Liverpool (12:30 GMT)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on 5 Live

You remember all those years ago when it was wheeled out to say that they are not going to re-referee and it was only for clear and obvious things, but it could not have gone further south than that even if they tried. I just think it’s been terrible and the standard of referees because of VAR are the worst we have seen for a long time and they are only getting worse.

Last night was poor decision from it. You should have given a penalty when you have already given two like that. How on earth do you not give another one? They are too reliant on it and it’s affecting the standard of refereeing now, and it’s not a good look.

  5. Man Utd to make formal complaint over decisionspublished at 12:18 GMT

Manchester United will make a formal complaint to referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Limited over what they feel was clear inconsistency in the decisions during Friday night's 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.

United were left furious about "astonishing" and "baffling" refereeing decisions as two penalties were awarded and one was not in a match that saw the Cherries come from behind twice.

United interim manager Michael Carrick, who described the decisions made as "baffling", said: "My first [thought] is he definitely got one of them wrong, because he's given one penalty for the same thing that he's not given one as a two-armed grab.

"So the Matheus Cunha one, he gives, the second one on Amad he doesn't, which is, I think, almost identical, really, two hands on someone in the box, and they go over and they're in control of the ball.

"Massive moment and I don't understand how you can give one and not the other - it's crazy. It's as obvious as you can get.

"It's clear, if that's what he believes is a penalty to start with then the second one has to be. I don't understand how you can't give that. And then the goal and after that it was chaos. It's astonishing."

Midfielder Jack Hinshelwood said he was delighted to have signed a new contract to stay at Brighton until June 2029.

"I've loved every minute of being at this club, and now I can stay here for another three years, hopefully," he told BBC Radio Sussex.

"I think since the summer, obviously, there was talks of hopefully extending my stay. And then the season didn't probably start the way I wanted it to, with the injury and stuff, and then obviously, now I've got myself back in the team. I think it's come at a really nice time.

"I look at Lewis Dunk and Solly March as role models all the time. If I have half the career Dunk's had, then I'll be happy.

"Playing in this higher sort of role, it's been really good. If I can add some goals and assists to my game as well, that will only help the team going forward.

"I love attacking the box. I think it's only a matter of time that I find the back of the net with the positions I'm getting in."

  12. 'I am a big believer in this team'published at 11:48 GMT

    Brighton v Liverpool (12:30)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler talking to Sky Sports: "We will stick to our principles and not get distracted by the lows we have had. I am a big believer in this team and the quality of these players.

"These players stepped up against Sunderland. Every player on the pitch knows their role.

"We need to play intense. You have to be intense against the top teams. It is a long journey from Liverpool to Brighton and we have to use that advantage.

"I always see a football game as an event and supporters pay a lot of money. I want them to enjoy it."

    Brighton v Liverpool (12:30 GMT)

    Chris Adams
    BBC Sport journalist

A comprehensive win over Galatasaray on Wednesday sent Liverpool through to the last eight of the Champions League and a similar result in East Sussex today would go some way towards securing Arne Slot's side a place in Europe's elite competition again next season.

Liverpool are fifth in the table, which should be enough to merit a place through the traditional route, although of course they could qualify also by winning the current tournament.

Despite their patchy league form – four wins from 12 in 2026 – strong runs in Europe and the FA Cup mean there is still plenty for the Reds to play for.

Dominik Szoboszlai is making a strong case to be named their player of the season, although there is a school of thought that the Hungary midfielder's versatility has worked against him, as he has often been deployed at right-back because of injuries to the likes of Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.

He scored from midfield against the Turkish champions and didn't let a defensive role against Tottenham Hotspur last week stop him smashing home a fourth direct free-kick of the season, taking him just one shy of the long-standing Premier League record jointly held by David Beckham and Laurent Robert.

No player has scored more goals from outside the box than Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai this season (four).

All four of his strikes have been from direct free-kicks, with only David Beckham (2000-01) and Laurent Robert (2001-02) netting more in a single campaign (both five).

I could play a few more years - Milner

Asking James Milner to choose the one match from his career he would like to relive is not straightforward. Not least because the Brighton midfielder has played in quite a few.

Milner, 40, recently broke Gareth Barry's record for most Premier League appearances and has now taken his tally to 656.

He made his first-team debut for hometown club Leeds in November 2002, was once the Premier League's youngest goalscorer and is now its oldest.

In the interim, Milner has played for a string of big clubs and collected numerous trophies. As part of dynasties at Manchester City and Liverpool, he won three Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups and one League Cup, as well as other honours.

In this week's Football Interview he tells Kelly Somers that one of his biggest achievements to date was to get back on the pitch this season after being sidelined for nine months after a knee operation that left him unable to lift his foot.

  16. Team news - two Liverpool changespublished at 11:20 GMT

    Brighton v Liverpool (12:30 GMT)

Despite playing less than three days ago, Arne Slot makes just the two changes from Liverpool's 4-0 win over Galatasaray. And both are enforced, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Cody Gakpo coming in for the injured Alisson and Mohamed Salah. Dominik Szoboszlai is set to start down the right in Salah's absence.

Liverpool: Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Gakpo, Ekitike.

Substitutes: Woodman, Gomez, Chiesa, Jones, Robertson, Nyoni, Ramsay, Morrison, Ngumoha.

Fabian Hurzeler names an unchanged Brighton side from the eleven that started the win at Sunderland last weekend

Brighton: Verbruggen; Wieffer, Van Hecke, Dunk, Kadioglu; Milner, Gross; Gomez, Hinshelwood, Minteh; Welbeck.

Substitutes: Steele, Georginio, Baleba, Kostoulas, Boscagli, Mitoma, Ayari, De Cuyper, Veltman.

  18. 'Brighton will beat them'published at 11:12 GMT

    Brighton v Liverpool (12:30 GMT)

    .

Brighton have hit a bit of form but how do you know what to expect from Liverpool at the moment? They are so up and down - will they turn up this week?

Liverpool's standout player this season has been Dominik Szoboszlai, and they are probably looking to him to do something special again here.

I've mentioned before how Brighton fans are not having Fabian Hurzeler, so this run of good results as manager - they have won three of their past four games - has come at a good time.

I was at Anfield in December when Liverpool won 2-0 and Brighton should have got something out of that game. This time, Brighton will beat them.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

  19. 'A very intense game'published at 11:08 GMT

Liverpool boss Arne Slot is expecting an intense game today, particularly after the Reds were in European action just a couple of days ago.

"We only have 60 hours of rest after putting in an enormous physical performance," he said.

"Brighton has always been a team who want to play, bring the ball out from the back, and make it a very intense game."
