Boreham Wood through to third round with win over Newport County
Non-league Boreham Wood beat League Two strugglers Newport County to book their place in the third round of the FA Cup for the first time in three years.
Jeff King's volley put the hosts in front shortly after the half-hour mark at Meadow Park, with Regan Booty doubling the National League side's lead three minutes later.
Wood's top scorer Matt Rush blasted beyond Nik Tzanev in the second half to cap off an impressive victory for Luke Garrard's side.
Defeat leaves Christian Fuchs - who lifted the FA Cup with Leicester City in 2021 - without a win in his three matches since taking charge of Newport.
Boreham Wood enjoyed plenty of possession from the outset, although Newport had the better chances early on, with Bobby Kamwa, Gerard Garner and Nathan Opoku going close.
But the Hertfordshire side increasingly asked more questions of the Football League's bottom club and went ahead as King volleyed beyond Tzanev after the goalkeeper kept out Abdul Abdulmalik's initial effort.
Newport looked shell-shocked, and Garrard's men capitalised as Zak Brunt squared to Booty, who converted from close range to double his side's lead with his second goal in three matches since joining on loan from Barrow.
Just 14 minutes after the restart, Erico Sousa played Rush through on goal, and the forward drilled beyond Tzanev at the goalkeeper's near post for his side's third.
Boreham Wood - fifth in the National League - kept Newport at bay to keep a second clean sheet in three matches and confirm their place in Monday night's third-round draw.
Post-match reaction
Boreham Wood boss Luke Garrard told BBC Match of the Day:
"To go and deliver a performance in the manner in which we did, we were excellent today.
"To a man, we were unbelievable, and that's full credit to the players.
"When they (his players) play like that, we don't have to fear anyone."
Newport County boss Christian Fuchs:
"After 90 minutes if you walk off with a 3-0 defeat of course you're not happy with the performance.
"The first 15 to 20 minutes we had some very good moments and should go 1-0 or 2-0 up in my eyes.
"But we were too passive in the first half, we didn't push forwards and we knew Boreham Wood are a good team. We just got sucked in to their way of playing and they took advantage."
