Garbutt hit the woodwork before Colchester restored their advantage in the 51st minute when Ellis Iandolo lashed home after showing persistence in the Salford area.
And it was 3-1 four minutes later when Read unleashed a superb strike into the far corner from Samson Tovide's pass.
But Salford pulled a goal back four minutes later when Ade Oluwo headed in Garbutt's pinpoint free-kick into the box.
Substitute Fabio Borini then equalised from the penalty spot for the hosts in the 75th minute after Rob Hunt had been penalised for a foul on Oluwo, before Garbutt won it for Salford with a sweet left-foot strike from Borini's pass in the second minute of stoppage time.
