Sam Edozie levelled the game up after Isaac Price's penalty
Sam Edozie scored his first goal of the season as Southampton drew at West Bromwich Albion in a competitive Championship encounter.
The Baggies took the lead inside five minutes when Isaac Price struck a penalty into the top corner of the net.
Edozie then fired home on the half-volley from close range, after being found by Kuryu Matsuki who headed across goal to his team-mate at the back post.
James Morrison's Baggies slip to fifth in the table while Southampton are just behind in sixth with one point separating the two sides.
The hosts came close to taking the lead in the fourth minute when Jimmy-Jay Morgan dashed into the box and lashed an effort narrowly over from close range.
But Morrison's side were soon rewarded for their early pressure after Jack Stephens brought Rabby Nzingoula down inside the box.
Price stepped up from the spot and fired a powerful effort into the top right-hand side of the net, past Saints keeper Daniel Peretz.
Just before the break, Price nearly scored a second as he latched on to a ball over the top of the Southampton back-line, cutting inside before pushing a shot past the right-hand post.
Tonda Eckert's Southampton drew level early in the second half as Matsuki nodded across goal to Edozie, who fired the ball in at the near post on the half-volley.
Saints split Albion's defence open just after the hour mark when Flynn Downes played Finn Azaz through down the left-hand side, but his effort on goal from a tight angle was tame and collected by Max O'Leary.
They came close again with 10 minutes remaining when Azaz slipped Lewis Dobbin through on goal, but his effort was straight at O'Leary.
Albion had some great chances late on but Aune Heggebo had a shot from close range well saved by Peretz before Tammer Bany struck the side netting with a low strike as the points were shared.
West Brom 'should have nicked another' in first half -
West Bromwich Albion head coach James Morrison speaking to BBC Radio WM:
"It was a great game to watch for a neutral and a great game of football so credit to both sides.
"We were so dominant in the first half and then Southampton had the better of the second half, both teams had chances to win it but I think that both teams can be happy with a point.
"We were so good in the first half and I'm probably a bit greedy but we should have nicked another goal while we had the chances."
Morrison: 'Both [sides] went out and attacked the game'
Draw a 'fair result' - Eckert
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert speaking to BBC Radio Solent:
"With the performance in the first half that's on me, we only had two days to prepare.
"We started the game and approached it with a bit too much respect for the opponents and I take that on me but the team showed what they are about in the second half.
"A compliment to them (West Brom) as they have some great rotations in the last line and again we decided to give them too much respect.
"We were much braver in the second half and I would say that overall it is a fair result."
Eckert: 'We were much braver in the second half'
