That's all from us for now.

Another busy morning of Champions League reaction with great involvement from you lot as always.

We'll be back around 13:00 to bring you a handful of news conferences that are taking place this afternoon, including that of Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior.

For now, though, here are the best bits from today:

  2. Premier League could get an extra Champions League spotpublished at 12:04 GMT

Despite the poor results this week, the Premier League could rubber-stamp an extra place in the Champions League on Thursday night.

The two best performing leagues will get an additional spot, and England has already matched the score of the second-placed country from last season.

With so many teams in action it is a complicated picture. But realistically only Germany, Spain and Portugal can overtake England.

In simple terms, two of the following happening would likely secure it:

    • Two teams from Germany being knocked out
    • Two teams from Spain being knocked out
    • Portugal lose FC Porto from the Europa League

There are other permutations based upon the results for the English clubs, because teams progressing would raise the Premier League score.

It will see fifth get a Champions League place again, after Newcastle benefitted last season.

But if Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth, sixth in the Premier League will also get into the Champions League.

Disagree with Andy Reid on arrogance of the PL teams. Did Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle and City losing really surprise that many people? They lost to very good teams because they are very good teams.

  4. Is everyone just being a bit dramatic?published at 11:57 GMT

The Premier League's power was supposedly emphasised by having six teams in the last 16, following the league stage and play-offs.

High hopes were then formed at the prospect of having a record number of English clubs in the quarter-finals - four progressed to the last eight in 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2018-19 but no nation has ever had more than that.

Instead only two remain in Europe's premier competition.

However, that represents what could be considered a normal year, with two English teams progressing to the last eight in four of the past 10 seasons and, on three occasions, just one team.

More Premier League representation this year meant more opportunity but, in reality, the outcome does not stray far from the norm.

The standard in the PL this season has been the worst ever, the quality is so bad, so it's no surprise this has leaked into the English CL teams. If route one/long throws continues to thrive in the PL, we'll continue to struggle in Europe.

  6. Premier League's 'arrogance' in Europepublished at 11:52 GMT

    Andy Reid
Former Spurs midfielder on The Football Daily Podcast

I do think that there is a bit of arrogance around the Premier League.

You go into some of them games and you think you can just go out and run all over the top of them... and then you quickly realise, when you come out against some of these teams, that they can hit you, particularly on the counter-attack... they can really, really hurt you.

You can’t underestimate some of these teams. You think, ‘We can go toe to toe with these, we can press them as high as we want, we can commit as many men as we want,’ and then all of a sudden you concede goals really quickly... bang, bang, bang, goals go in, and then you think, ‘Right, the game’s over here'.

It’s difficult to really hang your hat on the Premier League being top notch at the moment. I think it’s very bitty, I think it’s very inconsistent.

  7. 'You cannot take your foot off the gas in the Premier League'published at 11:48 GMT

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on MOTD: UEFA Champions League

You can't take your foot off the gas in the Premier League but it feels like you almost can in other leagues a little bit.

PSG rested players to be ready for Chelsea, even though they are not having a great time of it in Ligue 1 at the moment.

For Real Madrid, everything is about the Champions League, whereas in England it is about qualifying for the Champions League next year if you are not in the title race. It is a little bit different in the way the teams look at it.

The Premier League may be a monolith of a league, but only Liverpool are a 'European Giant'. It's to be expected only 2 teams progressed. Pundits and media hype overplay the Premier League and declare teams in January the 'best in Europe' when nothing is won.

  9. Is tougher Premier League leading to failure in Europe?published at 11:39 GMT

    Jess Anderson
    BBC Sport

The Premier League is often hailed as the toughest and most competitive in Europe, and the statistics tend to back that up.

According to Opta's power rankings, Burnley - the lowest-ranked side - are tougher opposition than nine teams in Spain's La Liga and 11 teams in Italy's Serie A.

That means Europe's top teams are able to prioritise the Champions League with less demanding matches domestically.

Squads can be rotated more frequently, with big players rested for the biggest games.

Real Madrid have struggled with injuries this season but have used 32 players in La Liga, indicating an ability to manage minutes to save players for European games.

But, while competition across this year's Premier League might be tougher, inconsistency has also been a feature, as many teams struggled to string together sustained periods of good form.

  10. 'Anybody can beat anybody closer to the truth in Premier League'published at 11:37 GMT

    Umir Irfan
    Football tactics correspondent

Games in the Premier League are tiring affairs.

Using ELO, a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players made famous in chess, the relative strength of teams in the Premier League are calculated as higher than their European counterparts.

Simply put, the Premier League has more of the best teams outside of the Champions League places.

The cliche, "anybody can beat anybody" in the Premier League is closer to the truth than in La Liga or the Bundesliga.

This makes rotation more costly for managers.

Is the Premier League weaker than its reputation suggests?

Or is the very strength of it the reason players are struggling to perform across all competitions?

  12. Did Premier League teams have the toughest draws?published at 11:32 GMT

The format of the Champions League means there is rarely such thing as a favourable draw.

Five of the six English teams competing in Europe's top competition finished inside the top eight of the league phase, securing automatic progression to the last 16. Newcastle booked their place later after coming through the play-offs.

Several of Europe's heavy hitters also finished outside the top eight and therefore faced the lottery of the play-offs - but, across two legs rather than the one-off games of the league stage, the higher-seeded teams generally came out on top.

That left the Premier League sides facing tough matches in the last 16, so is it really that surprising to see so few remaining?

Before the first legs, Opta predicted four of the six English teams would go through.

After the first leg, only Arsenal and Liverpool were tipped to progress, with that prediction ultimately coming to fruition - and it could be argued they each faced more favourable opponents in Bayer Leverkusen and Galatasaray.

  13. A bruising last-16 for the majority of the English teamspublished at 11:28 GMT

As Arsenal and Liverpool eye up the fun and drama that the quarter-finals bring, let's remind ourselves of the fallen English sides in the Champions League.

It wasn't a great week for many - Newcastle, Man City, Tottenham and Chelsea all knocked out of the competition at the last-16 stage.

They conceded 28 goals between them across the two legs.

    • Chelsea - conceded eight against PSG
    • Newcastle - conceded eight against Barcelona
    • Tottenham - conceded seven against Atletico Madrid
    • Man City - conceded five against Real Madrid

Remember, Arsenal did beat Bayern earlier this season, and quite comprehensively too.

It was a 3-1 win in the league phase at the Emirates, with Jurrien Timber, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli amongst the goals.

In that match, Arsenal had more of the ball, more shots and an xG of 2.72 (1.4xG from set-pieces).

It's whether the tension of a final would make it a completely different game or not. But there's a long way to go before then, right?

  15. Who are the top goalscorers in the Champions League?published at 11:13 GMT

The Champions League has long been a stage for the world’s most prolific forwards, with Harry Kane creating history by becoming the first Englishman to reach 50 Champions League goals on Thursday.

But who else joins him in the list of the competitions top goalscorers?

    1. Cristiano Ronaldo 141
    2. Lionel Messi 129
    3. Robert Lewandowski 109
    4. Karim Benzema 90
    5. Raul Gonzalez 71
    6. Kylian Mbappe 68
    7. Ruud Van Nistelrooy 60
    8. Andriy Shevchenko 59
    9. Erling Haaland 57

If Bayern do get to the final, they'll have beaten some giants to get there. Real Madrid stand in their way in the quarter-finals, and the winner faces Liverpool or PSG.

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich feels like a classic Champions League tie, doesn't it?

In 2024, Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich 4-3 on aggregate to set up a Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.

Currently, both sides have an extensive injury list, with Real Madrid without six players and Bayern missing seven.

From their past meetings, Madrid boast eight wins compared to Bayern's three while the other three occasions have ended in draws.

History might favour Los Blancos, but the form of Vincent Kompany's side this season will see them fear nobody.

Who goes through? Thumbs up for Real, thumbs down for Bayern.
