On-loan Celtic defender Stephen Welsh celebrates after scoring on his return to Motherwell

At a glance

  • Stephen Welsh's late strike holds Rangers to draw and rocks their charge in the Scottish Premiership title race

  • Nico Raskin's sixth-minute strike looked likely to give Danny Rohl's side victory against the 10 men of Motherwell, who had Lukas Fadinger sent off

  • Rangers now five points behind league leaders Hearts, who they play on Sunday, and just a point ahead of Celtic who scored a late winner against Livingston

Rangers failed to match Hearts' pace in the Scottish Premiership title race as they conceded an 89th-minute equaliser to 10-man Motherwell, with the gap at the top of the table now five points wide.

Nico Raskin's early goal looked like it had given Rangers victory, but on-loan Celtic defender Stephen Welsh lashed in a late leveller to spark frenzied scenes at Fir Park.

There were only six minutes on the clock when Raskin put Rangers in front, just moments after Motherwell's Emmanuel Longelo had a shot saved.

Rangers broke forward through Mohamed Diomande and when the Ivorian slipped through Raskin, the midfielder tucked the ball away with aplomb.

It was the first goal Motherwell had conceded at home in nine matches, since before Danny Rohl had even been appointed Rangers boss, but they didn't let their heads drop.

As has been typical of them this season, they continued to dominate the ball and create chances, with Tawanda Maswanhise hitting a post and Stephen O'Donnell seeing a sclaffed effort cleared off the line.

Really though, it should have been 2-0 to the visitors before the break. Youssef Chermiti blocked a Welsh header at the back and went one-on-one, but his poked effort was straight at the keeper.

The vim and vigour of the first half was not as evident in the second as Rangers started to slow the game down, frustrating their hosts and limiting their energetic midfield.

Motherwell's task got that much harder when Lukas Fadinger flew into a tackle on Mikey Moore, catching the on-loan Spurs winger on the ankle with his studs. After a video assistant referee (VAR) review, he was off and the hosts had to play the final 13 minutes with 10 men.

But in spite of that, there was time for a fight back as Welsh connected with Eythor Bjorgolffson's knock down in the box and added the latest twist to an unbelievable Premiership title battle.

Analysis: Mighty Motherwell not happy with a point

If it had not been for those points Motherwell dropped at the start of the season, they might be doing more than just having a say in the destination of the league trophy.

Despite going behind early in the first half, they bossed the rest of the 40 minutes.

Popping it about, getting into dangerous positions, players who look like multi-million pound signings. Over 60% possession. Some of the football is mesmeric.

But, as Welsh said in his post-match interview, they're not happy with a point. This is a team with big ambitions and, while they're 13 points behind Hearts, it's not that far to the Old Firm.

They are now 10 home games unbeaten, and were able to reintroduce Elliot Watt and Stephen Welsh into the team. Those are big players to come back in.

And to get a goal, when Rangers looked likely to score a second, down to 10 men? Talk about character.

One late goal for Motherwell, one giant shift in the Premiership title race.

Drawing with this Well team is no disgrace, and most other teams in the league would be delighted to leave Fir Park with a point.

But it will be hard for Rohl to put a positive spin on this. They had held on to the lead for so long, weathered several storms when Motherwell were pushing for an equaliser, yet conceded when they had a man advantage.

The head coach hasn't had to pick his players up off the floor too often, but this squad's psyche will now be hugely tested.

Rangers are usually in the habit of scoring late, not conceding. While it was maybe uncharacteristic, it is a reminder that this title race will not be straightforward.

What remains to be seen is how the side respond against Hearts on Sunday. Will they roar back, fired up by their failure to win at Fir Park? Or will they be deflated? Only time will tell.

What they said

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou: "We are pleased and happy that we fought our way back with one man down and got a goal, but it was fully deserved.

"When you look at the game, the performance was sensational from start to finish. The dominance we showed in possession, twice the touches in the opposition box as Rangers... it was a performance that got people out of their seats."

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl: "The first 10 minutes we were very strong, we played fantastic football for the goal, it was outstanding. Then Motherwell did really well and we struggled in our pressing.

"At half time, we had to adjust some parts and we were much more organised. We had moments where we had to make it 2-0. Finally, there's the red card. It is not always an advantage because you know they'll go direct.

"It hurts today. We have to accept it, but move forward."

What's next?

Rangers host Hearts on Sunday afternoon (16:30 GMT) while Motherwell welcome Aberdeen earlier in the day (14:30).
