People here are so excited about this game. Last time they reached this stage was in 1983 when it was the European Cup.

17 straight wins at home is a club record. They're certainly in good form and confident they could cause an upset.

Oh look, 2 of the 3 Arsenal stars, widely said to be feigning injury rather than turning out for England are still not available.

  5. We meet again...published at 19:53 BST

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

This fixture is already the most-played in major European competition history with 26 of their 28 meetings in the European Cup/Champions League taking place in the knockout stages.

They are the two sides in Europe's top flight with the most wins - Real have 309 and Bayern 248.

The two have also reached the Champions League quarter-finals more than any other side with Real progressing to the last four on 17 of their 22 occasions while the German side have been eliminated at this phase more than anyone else - 10 out of 24 times.

Bayern are also winless in their last nine games against the Spanish giants having drawn two and lost seven.

Arsenal have to not let the season run away from them.

Everything they have built this season, don't let it affect them. They have been in this situation before and they don't want to relive that.

  8. Arsenal need to use 'pain' of results as 'fuel' - Rayapublished at 19:50 BST

David Raya says Arsenal need to use the "pain" of their recent losses to pick up a positive result against Sporting and end the season in a strong way.

The Gunners come into the game having lost back-to-back games for the first time this season following losses to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final and Southampton in the quarter-final of the FA Cup.

Raya did not play either of those games himself as cup goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was given the nod.

"It is a disappointing moment," Raya said.

"We just have to use that fuel and that pain that we had after the game to pick it up for the rest of the season. It starts tomorrow. That is the most important game."

Looking at the Arsenal starting 11, I think it's fair to say Mikel Arteta is taking no chances with this first leg! I'm not an Arsenal fan, but I think they will be going through to the semi finals.

I think this is the end of the cycle for Arteta. This is do or die for him.

You watched how City went about them without the ball, and then you watched how Southampton went about them off the ball as well. He didn't come up with an answer in either.

  13. More than just a quarter-final for Gunnerspublished at 19:40 BST

    Sporting v Arsenal (20:00 BST)

    Alex Howell
BBC Sport Arsenal reporter at José Alvalade Stadium

It's more than just a Champions League quarter-final for the Gunners tonight against Sporting.

Arsenal can avoid the narrative about them being 'nearly men' if they are able to win after back-to-back losses.

Mikel Arteta's side are in a commanding position in the Premier League and in the last eight of this competition but with every game from now until the end of the season being important, they cannot afford to slip up.

With Bayern Munich the front three are scoring so many goals. Between Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise they have 86 goals between them in all competitions. That is 23 more than any other trio in Europe.

Harry Kane is a big part of that with his 48 goals. Right now we are seeing the best Harry Kane.

  16. Real to return to winning ways?published at 19:35 BST

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

Is playing Real Madrid after a really disappointing loss a good or a bad thing?

Los Blancos suffered a 2-1 defeat by Mallorca on Saturday in La Liga and that could go one of two ways.

It hasn't been their best domestic season - they are now seven points adrift of league-leaders Barcelona - but in Europe is where we know they can really turn it on and that could mean trouble for Bayern Munich tonight.

So will it be a return to winning ways? Or more disappointment for Alvaro Arbeloa's side?

Thousands of supporters from both sides were swarming The Bernabeu hours before kick-off, although they got a shock when a warm early evening was transformed into a wet one by a torrential downpour.

Bayern Munich fans have already occupied their corner in the top two tiers of the vast stands and are making plenty noise, with a huge cheer as Vincent Kompany's side came out to warm up.

The weather in Madrid has been more changeable than Manchester today as a warm, sunny day suddenly gave way to a heavy downpour a little earlier, meaning the grass is a bit on the moist side as the players come out to warm up.

Bayern Munich arrive in Madrid in a rich vein of form at the moment with 11 wins and two draws from their last 13 games, will that unbeaten run continue tonight?

Get Involved - Slot's 'inexorably passive tactics'published at 19:27 BST

Click 'Get Involved' at the top of the page

Slot keeps talking about Liverpool being “inconsistent”. As if we are really good and get punished “in moments”. I would argue his inexorably passive tactics mean that well coached teams can pick and choose when to assert themselves over us and we allow that by maintaining our tactical passivity.

    Sam, Sidmouth

How many times this season have Liverpool addressed their issues? And how many times has nothing changed? To say they gave up on Saturday is an absolute disgrace. I blame slot for the dreadful boring stuff, but the players must take responsibility as well.

  20. Mbappe v Kanepublished at 19:25 BST

Real Madrid v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

Bayern Munich might have Harry Kane but Real Madrid have got their own ruthless goalscorer in Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman has averaged a goal every 56 minutes for Real in the Champions League this season (13 goals in nine games).

His 38 goals in 36 games across all competitions this season mean he is scoring at least one goal per game.

Will he find himself on the scoresheet again tonight?
