Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins both scored as high-flying Aston Villa ended their long wait for a St James' Park victory against Newcastle United.
The visitors had not triumphed on Tyneside since an infamous afternoon in 2005, when Newcastle went down to eight men and team-mates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were both sent off for fighting each other.
But Unai Emery's men have won more points on the road than any other Premier League side for a reason this season, and they showed their mettle away from home once again.
It was the rejuvenated Buendia who opened the scoring when the Argentine brilliantly scooped the ball past Nick Pope from outside the box to silence the stadium in the 19th minute.
Watkins then sealed the victory late on when the unmarked striker headed home from substitute Lucas Digne's cross, leaving the away end singing in the rain as their side moved level on points with second-placed Manchester City.
That was the cue for a number of Newcastle supporters to make their way for the exits on a disappointing afternoon for their side, who would have moved ahead of champions Liverpool with a victory.

Estevao Willian replaced the injured Cole Palmer and inspired a comfortable win over Crystal Palace that moved Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four.
Goals from Estevao, Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez earned the points at Selhurst Park, while Palace's England midfielder Adam Wharton was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the space of six second‑half minutes.
Chris Richards headed in a consolation goal from close range late on. Palace had looked the more likely to score first early in the match. Striker Jean‑Philippe Mateta, linked with Aston Villa and Juventus, went one‑on‑one with Robert Sanchez but hit his shot straight at the Chelsea goalkeeper.
Fernandez and Caicedo had efforts for Chelsea, with returning Palace winger Ismaila Sarr, fresh from winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, having an attempt at the other end before Estevao opened the scoring in the 34th minute.
He latched on to a poor back-pass from Jaydee Canvot, used his pace to escape marker Tyrick Mitchell and drove a firm shot past Dean Henderson.
The 18-year-old Brazilian had a further attempt before the interval - and after the break, he clipped a pass to forward Joao Pedro, who turned Palace midfielder Wharton, before shooting through Henderson to double the advantage.
After a lengthy check by the video assistant referee, Chelsea were then awarded a penalty - Joao Pedro's goalbound effort having struck Canvot's hand inside the box - and Fernandez converted. Minutes after earning a first yellow card for pulling Caicedo, Wharton was late in a tackle, earned his second booking and was sent off.
It was a miserable afternoon for Palace despite Richards heading in from a corner in the 88th minute as they dropped from 13th to 15th, eight points above the relegation zone.

Nottingham Forest goalscorer Taiwo Awoniyi, speaking to Sky Sports: "We're so happy because we knew we needed the win. Getting a clean sheet with the win is so good.
"It says a lot about the togetherness and doing the basics. We fought for every ball and all played for each other.
On his goal: "At 1-0 we were just defending but we said at half-time we needed one more goal. It was a great ball from Morgan Gibbs-White and I was able to do well against a defender.
"My instinct was to go forward."
On recent form: "We are only focused on ourselves. When we get every point we need then it will be fine."

Nottingham Forest gave their hopes of Premier League survival a major boost with a hard-fought win against Brentford at Gtech Community Stadium.
Goals from Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi proved decisive in a victory that moved them level on points with 16th-placed Leeds United, but crucially five clear of third-bottom West Ham.
Brentford began brightly and were unlucky not to open the scoring after just 94 seconds with Igor Thiago poking wide. But the visitors struck in the 12th minute when Igor Jesus found the far corner in style after initially controlling on his chest before swivelling and volleying beyond Caoimhin Kelleher.
The hosts had ample warning the Brazilian required closer attention, having seen him spurn another opportunity five minutes earlier.
Forest had won just three of their previous 11 away Premier League games prior to Sunday's encounter and retreated into their shell after going in front as nerves started settled in.
Substitute Sepp van den Berg, who replaced injured defender Kristoffer Ajer in the 37th minute, was inches away from an equaliser on the stroke of half-time after heading narrowly wide.
The Bees dominated possession and territory after the break but failed to register a single shot on target.
Igor Thiago went closest with a half volley that strayed wide in the final 15 minutes as Forest held on tightly to their narrow advantage.
With time running out, Brentford were caught on the counter when Awoniyi showed strength to hold off a defender before finishing through Kelleher's legs for his first league goal in a year.
FT: Brentford 0-2 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest goalscorer Taiwo Awoniyi, speaking to BBC MOTD: "It was a good team effort, we defended low blocks."
On his goal: "It was a great ball from Morgan Gibbs-White and I did the rest."
On Igor Jesus' goal: "Igor is a quality striker. His link up play and fight up front is what a striker needs to do. What a great finish - ball into his chest and then hit it. That's what a striker needs to do."
On taking chances: "We want to get the ball into the net as much as we can so we've been working on that. It hasn't been showing recently but it all came into play today."
On keeping a five-point gap to third-bottom West Ham: "We just look after ourselves and focus on getting every point needed. Once we get our home results we will be fine."
FT: Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "I saw many good things but we lost and haven't won for 11 games. We played a good first half, then we had one big chance, couldn't take it, made one big mistake and we were 1-0 down.
"We conceded another goal and we lost completely our confidence and the structure and the game was over. But after 3-0 down and having a red card, we created three more chances that gives me confidence we will get this turned around and have a lot of confidence we will get this sorted.
"I cannot blame anyone, it's just a lack of confidence and it's my job, together with the staff, to get the confidence back. I really liked the spirit, even when it was 3-1 there was a belief in the stadium and that gives me a lot of positivity. This is such a great group of players, such great character that's why I really have a huge belief in this group."
On the penalty, he said: "If you save a ball with your hand that would've been a goal then yes it's a penalty."
FT: Brentford 0-2 Nottingham Forest
Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt, speaking to Sky Sports: "We had two big chances with (Igor) Thiago and Dango (Ouattara) but weren't clinical enough today.
"We took too long to get into the game but weren't clinical enough.
"If Dango scores to make it 1-1 then it's a different game.
"We knew they would be hard to break down and their second goal was exactly what we expected. We just didn't do it well enough and we need to take responsibility."

You have to be careful not to put this result down to Palace falling apart. On another day, against lesser opposition than today, at half-time they could have been a couple of goals up.
I mean Mateta asking to leave and then missing a couple of chances is going to blow up a little bit, with fans saying 'oh he's not with it', but again it is not that simple.
They were on this bad run when they had Guehi, and before the manager said he was leaving. It is just a bad run. But I don't fear for them, watching that, I don't think they are going to carry on all season losing games.
They have got enough quality to get back on a decent run, but they do need some help, they need some players in. The problem is it is hard getting players in when you are asking a player to sign when you don't know who the manager is going to be.
It's a shame, because they have gone from their best season ever to a situation now where the fans are angry, some of the players want to leave, and the manager is going... in the space of a few months.
But in isolation today, that game wasn't a problem. They actually showed a lot of fighting spirit and quality in that first half.

Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche, speaking to Sky Sports: "We have to work with players in different competitions and I was pleased with today. We defended resolutely in the second half and it's seven points from three games now.
"We know what a good outfit Brentford are and obviously it was a bit nervy sometimes but we found our moments.
"Coming out of a tough spell, which can happen in the Premier League, we've got a couple of clean sheets so I'm pleased."
On goals for Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi: "All the sides want a striker that scores and I'm pleased for our two today."

This result and performance was just more confirmation really of the excellent work that Unai Emery has done with this Villa team.
Even though they are playing game after game, and are missing some key players, they are so well drilled that it is very hard to play against them, even when some of them might be a bit tired.
And I know he made a few changes, so it was not completely the same XI as Thursday, but the tactical element of Villa is so ingrained in them that even when they make these changes, it doesn't look like it affects them.
There was no John McGinn today, for example, who has been so important for them, but it doesn't seem to make much difference because they all know their jobs so well.

FT: Brentford 0-2 Nottingham Forest
Brentford manager Keith Andrews, speaking to BBC MOTD: "We started the game well, conceded a goal we shouldn't have done, and then lost our way for 15 or 20 minutes.
"After that we controlled the game until a transitional moment which brought their second goal. We weren't clinical enough. We've done enough on the creation front, whether it's set-pieces or crosses, but not taken them.
"If we're being self-critical then we need to look at ourselves for how we conceded the goals. The reality is they have had two shots and come away with three points."
On striker Igor Thiago: "We didn't feed him enough and he's closely marked now, everyone knows about him and how he plays, so we need to find new ways to provide service for him."
FT: Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "I thought the players' application, attitude to run, their intensity to press was outstanding. This is a difficult place to come.
"Frustrated at the end of the game, 3-0 up with 10 men, we wanted three clean sheets in a row. In terms of attitude, application of the group, it was first class.
"A lot of really good signs, but room for a lot of improvements but you can't be disappointed to come here and win 3-1 away from home."
On the penalty Chelsea were awarded: "I feel for the defender, it's handball. I didn't want to see him sent off as he didn't mean to do it but I thought the referee got it completely right. His arm is by his side but the ball was going into the net so I thought it was the right decision."
FT: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The first-minute chance really shapes the game. Sandro goes through and it is a top save. Then Aston Villa were probably the better team in that first half and had a number of long shots and scored from one. I thought we chased the game pretty well in the second half and are disappointed we have lost the game.
"There were some real positives. It was Sven Botman's best game since returning from injury, good cameo's from Jacob Ramsey and Anthony Elanga and Lewis Miley played really well again but ultimately you lose 2-0 at home and we are disappointed. We know we can be better around their box. I thought our final ball was poor today.
"The big thing for us is that we need every available body and quality body available because obviously we lost Bruno (Guimaraes) before the game and then Joelinton. I think Bruno could be the only one back in contention for Wednesday.
"They are all pivotal weeks. It is a big period for us."

It's another defeat for Palace, but I thought first half they were actually really competitive, it was a really good performance and at that stage it could have gone either way - they were behind but they were well in the game and had missed a couple of sitters.
So, at half-time it was a completely different narrative to the way it ended up but, in their situation, you need a bit of luck to go your way - when you are losing your best players, there is a bit of discontent in the ground around your manager leaving and players leaving - they only go a goal down because of a mistake from a young lad, Jaydee Canvot, who has come in the team now Marc Guehi has left.
That's what happens when you don't have your experienced players, and they have not helped their manager with their recruitment, in the summer or now. You are coming up against a good Chelsea side, so you are going to get punished eventually.
Then they get frustrated and there is a sending off and a penalty that maybe shouldn't have been, and all of a sudden it looks like they are in disarray, when actually the first-half performance was really good.

FT: Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, speaking to Match of the Day, said: "Disappointing and frustrating. It looks like, right now, we are not good enough to win the game but we created our chances, we didn't take them and then we made too many mistakes to give the opponents the chances and they took it.
"When you've not won in 10 games the nerves are very thin and then you are 1-0 down and the players are frustrated. They feel we are in the game but 1-0 down again. These are tough moments, tough games. I look at the team and 3-0 down, a red card, you can go out five or six nil, but we came back, scored a goal and made a fight of it so that shows the great character of the group and that gives me a lot of confidence this group will turn it around.
"Confidence is what you get from results. It is my job, my responsibility, with my staff, my group, to get this confidence back. I saw a lot of positives but when you are losing 3-1 and have not won for 11 games then it's completely right to say 'where are the results?'
"That's what we have to get. It is up to us to find these puzzle pieces. There's no magician. I always believe in this group, these players, that we will turn it around."
FT: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: "We were being so consistent and we lost at home. We were disappointed and frustrated and we needed some days to recover our form. We played fantastic on Thursday and today. We competed fantastic.
"The players focused on this match at the level we want to achieve. We tried to keep our attitude and demands of working.
"They played a fantastic match. We needed the goalkeeper as well today. It is extraordinary, how he has his own challenge and how we needed him to feel strong defensively. He was fantastic. We did a complete match."

Villa's win is even more impressive because they played away in Europe on Thursday, and they have not got great strength in depth. And I thought first half when you'd expect Newcastle to really be the dominant force, they went toe to toe with them.
It was a really good game in the first half, Newcastle had a couple of chances too, but the amount of times that Villa played through them and got in the pockets of space around their area, with the two wide-men especially - Sancho and Buendia - tucking in and coming into those pockets, Newcastle were really struggling to cope with it.
Ollie Watkins was terrific too and I think with the amount of dangerous areas they got into in the first half, Villa probably felt disappointed they were only a goal up at half-time.
Inevitably Newcastle came out better in the second half, but Villa managed the game really well considering, as I said, the fatigue element. They soaked it up, and counter-attacked a couple of times too - they were still really dangerous.

FT: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I am so, so happy. The players were extraordinary. We spoke about this match and the difficulties some teams have with their level here. It is the highest level we can face this season and the players respond fantastic.
"The commitment to the fans... being so disciplined individually and collectively got us through it. We can only helped the players tactically. Out on the field they need to show the attitude and commitment to work to the game plan and they did it.
"Emiliano Martinez played a fantastic match. He focused on the match and his character, skills and commitment...because we need every player...really fantastic.
"Last week we lost and were so disappointed but we can be calm again and have confidence. We were comfortable in what we were doing."
FT: Brentford 0-2 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche, speaking to BBC MOTD: "Resilience was the most pleasing aspect. Brentford have been brilliant at home.
"It was a game of two halves. We put pressure on in the first half and had to contain them in the second.
"They had a fast start and it's not an easy task but you have to find a balance between defending resolutely and hitting on the attack."
On keeping a five-point gap over 18th-placed West Ham: "We can't do anything about other people, it's just about ourselves."
On goals for Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi: "We got a couple of very different goals. Igor took it superbly and Taiwo came on and slotted it calmly.
"The hardest job in the game is scoring as a centre forward. I don't put pressure on them to score I just want them in the right place."
On when new striker Lorenzo Lucca will be available: "Hopefully this week. It was just paperwork."
