Motherwell bounced back from their Scottish Cup exit by continuing their impressive Scottish Premiership form with a thumping defeat of St Mirren in Paisley.

The visitors moved within 10 points of leaders Hearts courtesy of a comprehensive victory that punished errors from the hapless 10-man hosts.

Motherwell opened the scoring after 13 minutes, Elijah Just finding a finishing touch after a raft of chances for the visitors.

After successive crosses from both sides had been cleared by the St Mirren defence, the New Zealand winger cut inside and fired in a low shot that curled away from Shamal George and into the far corner of the net.

The visitors didn't let up with their energetic attack and got further reward after half an hour when Tawanda Maswanhise won and then scored a penalty.

The prolific forward had taken a heavy touch when getting on the end of a Just through ball and George missed the ball but brought down the striker. Maswanhise made no mistake from the spot, calmly slotting past the St Mirren goalkeeper.

Things almost got even worse for the hosts when defender Alex Gogic was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Callum Slattery, but Video Assistant Referee Nick Walsh invited match official Calum Scott to review his decision and he downgraded the punishment to a yellow.

Stephen Robinson made a triple change at the break to try to turn things around, but Motherwell picked up where they left off and soon had a third when Ibrahim Said's drive took a deflection and squirmed under George.

St Mirren were reduced to 10 men when Richard King was dismissed for an off-the-ball incident with Slattery and Motherwell then scored a fourth when Emmanuel Longelo lashed in from a narrow angle.

The visitors got a fifth in the 66th minute when substitute Eythor Bjorgolfsson fired in an acrobatic volley that George couldn't stop.

St Mirren's relegation fears increase but Motherwell continue to look up after another impressive showing.

Analysis: Motherwell show title credentials but St Mirren worries increase

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou hasn't had many critics this season but a few eyebrows were raised when he made changes to his in-form side for the midweek cup defeat in Aberdeen.

He restored what is arguably his strongest side in Paisley and reaped the rewards as an energetic performance showcased all his team's best qualities.

Without the ball, they hunted down St Mirren players and kept up relentless pressure. With it, they cut through the opposition with ease, creating chance after chance and showing a ruthless edge to convert them. It was a performance of total domination.

Askou has constantly brushed aside talk of his team's title challenge, preferring to take things one game at a time. This performance underlined how Motherwell have to be considered as contenders, with two games against leaders Hearts still to play, plus two against Celtic and one against Rangers in what's going to be a thrilling run-in.

For St Mirren, the return of captain Mark O'Hara and key midfielder Keanu Baccus had Stephen Robinson talking about a "reset" before kick-off. Instead of a much-needed lift, he saw his side endure a horrific night.

The controversial sending off of King didn't help but St Mirren had already been outclassed and they had no answers to Motherwell's effervescent attack.

With two games coming up against fellow bottom-six sides Livingston and Dundee United, a reaction will be needed fast. Kilmarnock's draw at Tannadice moved them closer to the Buddies and there's now only a two-point gap to the relegation play-off spot, though St Mirren hold a game in hand.

The Premier Sports Cup triumph looks a long time ago now and the weeks ahead could be nervy for Robinson and his players.

What they said

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou: "We did the job right from the beginning. We were solid, we were aggressive, really good in possession.

"We knew we would have to be even though we had a few counter-attacks. We worked really hard out there to make sure we got the game on our terms. That was the main thing, starting on a high.

"We kept the hunger out there and the desire to keep chasing goals while we worked extremely hard to keep that clean sheet.

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson: "It's a very tough one to take and it was a long, long night.

"I have to take full responsibility. We changed to a back four to try and spark us, give us more energy and get more creative players in the team but it looked like a step too far.

"We've got to pick ourselves up. I'm embarrassed by the result. I'm embarrassed by the performance and I hope the players are too."

What's next?

St Mirren face a trip to take on Livingston next Saturday (15.00 GMT), while Motherwell ahost Dundee United at the same time.
