Newport County have signed St Johnstone midfielder Sven Sprangler on loan until the end of the 2025-26 season.

The 30-year-old defensive midfielder, who also has experience as a right-back, joined on deadline day as the Exiles looked to bolster their squad for their fight against League Two relegation.

Sprangler, a former Austrian Under-21s international, has played over 350 games as a professional during his time with SV Mattersburg, TSV Hartberg, Wolfsberger AC, SK Vorwärts Steyr and most recently St Johnstone.

"Everyone at Newport County would like to welcome Sven to Rodney Parade and wish him every success during his time with the club," said a club statement.

Sprangler brings in a much-needed body in central midfield, with Cameron Antwi and Sammy Braybrooke departing and Kai Whitmore having his contract terminated.

County also added midfielder Harrison Biggins during the January transfer window, while the signing of forward Cole Jarvis from National League South side Merthyr Town was announced the day after Tuesday's deadline.

Sprangler, Biggins and Jarvins join Ryan Delaney, Tanatswa Nyakuhwa and James Crole in moving to Rodney Parade during the transfer window.

Nathaniel Opoku and Ben Lloyd have also had their loans extended until the end of the season.

Christian Fuchs' side are three points from safety in 23rd in League Two, with 18 league games left to play.
