David Fitzpatrick hit a priceless winner as Macclesfield moved a step closer to League Two survival with a 1-0 victory at Port Vale.

Fitzpatrick slotted home a cool 66th-minute finish to wrap up a crucial win.

The Silkmen now have a two-point cushion over the relegation zone heading into the final weekend of the season, with their win relegating bottom club Yeovil.

Callum Evans forced Scott Brown into a save with a fierce shot after 13 minutes as the visitors started well.

Luke Hannant then fired wide six minutes later and went close with two more efforts as the home side enjoyed a good spell.

Tom Conlon was off target for Vale after he got on the end of Cristian Montano's 32nd-minute pass, before Fiacre Kelleher headed wide from Reece Cole's cross.

Cole had a shot saved after 50 minutes and Michael Rose curled an effort wide soon after.

Harry Smith was then denied by Brown but Fitzpatrick found the breakthrough with a great finish from 16 yards.
