  1. 'We want those numbers to be higher'published at 14:51 GMT

Arsenal v Kairat (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Arsenal

A final word from Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on a lack of goals from his forward players.

Summer signing Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Martinelli lead the scoring charts for Arsenal this season with a relatively low tally of nine goals apiece in all competitions.

But collectively the team, with 42 goals, is one of the top scorers in the Premier League this season, second only to Manchester City (47).

And they are also joint top scorers in the Champions League with 20 goals, level with Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain.

"We want those numbers to be higher but three [?] goals away from the best team," said Arteta.

"The margins are small. Maybe they are contributing to other players. We want to be best in every stat but must also read the stats for how they are important for us."

We have come to a terrible state in football were, as a Manchester United fan, I’m hoping the English teams in the Champions League do well just do open up 5th spot in the Prem. Supporting rivals to fund your club isn’t football. We have history and global appeal. I pity others.

Arsenal's poor Premier League performances of late are rife with nerves, caution and a cagey overly-defensive approach because of the pressure these players are under to win something. They've seemed freer in the Champions League, simply because there's no real pressure on each game. Deeper into the tournament, that nervousness will reappear.

  4. Arteta on 'the way you have to live when you want to achieve a dream'published at 14:28 GMT

Arsenal v Kairat (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Arsenal

More from Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on getting supporters on side: "That's why I'm encouraging them because it's going to be fun. Because that excitement, that conviction, that energy, that will is the way you have to live when you want to achieve a dream.

"When you want to achieve something you play for 10 months because out of that some incredible things are going to emerge. Some things that you can't even imagine.

"And for me that's the only way to live it because we're going to give it absolutely everything. We're going to prepare in the best possible way. And the best chance to deliver what we want is to put all the energy and channel the energy into that direction."

  5. 'We're going to live and play with enjoyment...and we're going to win it'published at 14:23 GMT

Arsenal v Kairat (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Arsenal

"The reaction has been excellent," started Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, as he pondered the response from his players to losing a first home game of the season - against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

"We took a moment to bring the temperature down, to pause and to reflect and to ask questions.

"One is how do we feel? How do I feel? And how do we want to live the next four months?

"And it was so encouraging and beautiful because what came out of there is very simple. We have earned the right to be in a great position in four competitions and - in the next four months - we're going to live and play with enjoyment, with a lot of courage and a conviction that we're going to win it.

"And this is the mindset and where we're going to put the energy.

"I'm just hoping everyone who is related to this club, especially the supporters, are going to jump on this boat because this is the way we're going to live the next four months."

Given the injuries our (Villa) midfield is sustaining, really happy to see Douglas Luiz back. Unai just needs to get him back to the same level he was before being forced to leave for draconian PSR rules.

Just a quick update on the story we brought you earlier linking Aston Villa with a move to re-sign Brazil midfielder Douglas Luiz from Juventus.

The West Midlands club have now agreed a deal to re-sign the 27-year-old on loan.

He is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, but is set to leave the City Ground before Monday's transfer deadline and join Villa.

Chelsea were also interested in the Brazil international but sources told BBC Sport his preference was Villa, where he made 204 appearances between 2019 and 2024.

Villa sold Luiz to Juventus for £42.5m in June 2024 to help solve their profit and sustainability problems, but he made just three Serie A starts before joining Forest in August 2025.

Villa boss Unai Emery is looking to bolster his midfield options, with captain John McGinn out for up to two months with a knee issue and Boubacar Kamara expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
