  2. 'Awesome effort'published at 16:54 GMT

England's captain Harry Brook celebratesImage source, Getty Images

England captain Harry Brook, speaking at the presentation: "I was working on a few things with Rooty [Joe Root] in the nets and thankfully it paid off today. I felt good and glad that me, Rooty and Beth [Jacob Bethell] could get us to that total."

On the effort to win the series from 1-0 down: "It was awesome. Awesome effort from everybody involved. Rooty's just exceptional, to have him in the side helps every day. I thought that was an exceptional performance by the lads.

"It was a lot better pitch than we were expecting. It still had a part to play and just glad that we got a good score and we managed to defend it.

"I was very happy with the way the spinners bowled. They were working in tandem really well, communication was outstanding and the way the lads batted and tried to put the pressure back on the bowlers even in tough conditions was awesome from the boys going into the T20s."

On how good this pitch was compared to the last game: "That was a decent wicket. It was good fun to bat on today. It was better than we thought."

Criticise Harry Brook all you like. He lets his bat talk.

  4. 'Good step forward for the group'published at 16:50 GMT

Player of the series England batter Joe Root, speaking at the presentation: "I think more than anything you want to win games and contribute to winning games. My role in this team is pretty obvious. It's nice to help the youngsters guys come through now I'm getting a bit older. That role and that aspect changes all the time. I'm trying to help those other guys come through.

"It was great out there and the way [Jacob] Bethell played and Harry [Brook] took the game on in that manner. It shows his versatility compared to how he played the other day and shows what we're capable of as a 50-over team. Really good step forward for this group after a tough period away from home. A lot to build on and for the guys that are staying for the T20 stuff, a lot of confidence to take into that as well."

On how he will be spending his time off: "I'm quite looking forward, to it to be honest. Having a little bit of time at home, a bit of a break, having a bit of time with the family.

"I'm looking forward to that Test series [against New Zealand]. It's very rare that we get time off in the calendar. If there's things you want to work on that's your chance to do it, that's what I want to try and do throughout that period."

God help us when Joe Root decides to retire! Not even worth thinking about.

  6. 'Tough to contain Brook & Root'published at 16:46 GMT

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka, speaking at the presentation: "It was a good game and the result was a bit disappointing in the end. We found a good name for number four in Pavan Rathnayake, who batted really well.

"I think the second game we could have batted better. We were 30 or 40 runs short. When you come to this his game Harry Brook and Joe Root they won it with good batting. It was tough to contain them. I thought the ball might turn on this surface but when it's not turning it's hard to bowl in the last 10 overs with spinners.

"I think the T20 series is the most important series before the T20 World Cup. We want to do the basic things right before an important World Cup."

We like to crucify England for their shortcomings recently (and rightly so) but they deserve their flowers for beating Sri Lanka in a series where they have beaten the best in the world consistently over the last five years. Should be something to build on.

Thought this was the England we need to see more of. Controlled the game when needed especially at the start of the innings. Preserved wickets and gave the chance to accelerate towards the end. So much better to see. Root and Brook were unbelievable!

    Will, Singapore

Nice to start winning some 50-over games. I actually like the format - long enough for changes but over in one day.

Sri Lanka are never easily beaten at home. They have a very long run of successes in series in their country.

For England, what a turnaround. They looked inept in the first game then gained some confidence in the second game. Today's performance from Joe Root and Harry Brook have been of a very different quality.

The runs on the board put England in a very unassailable position. The response at the top of Sri Lanka's innings was exciting but these sorts of totals are always so tough to get close to.

For Sri Lanka, a rare series defeat at home. For England, a boost before the T20 tournament.

Sri Lanka were previously unbeaten in four home ODI series so that's a decent effort by England to fight back from 1-0 down.

We'll bring you all of the reaction from the post-match presentation.

Sri Lanka make a decent fist of it but England are worthy winners of this match thanks to centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook.

England also clinch a 2-1 series victory.

Rathnayake b Curran 121 (SL 304 all out)

A fine knock from Pavan Rathnayake, but his leg stump is knocked over by a full delivery from Sam Curran which goes through his legs.

Sri Lanka left themselves with too much to do at the end but to their credit they did not completely fold in the face of a big total.

  14. SL 304-9published at 46.2 overs

Pavan Rathnayake gets down low and manages to meet a delivery from Sam Curran on the full which he paddles round the corner for four.

Rathnayake gives it the heave-ho into the leg side and Jacob Bethell produces a bit of fielding magic on the fence to palm the ball into the field and save a boundary.

    Vandersay c Curran b Dawson 14 (SL 298-9)

Liam Dawson is back. Solid and dependable are his middle names.

A single followed by three dots from the left-arm spinner before he holds one back to Jeffrey Vandersay whose eyes light up.

Vandersay, however, can only chip the ball in the and Sam Curran scuttles in from the straight boundary to pouch the catch.

There was a thought earlier that Pavan Rathnayake hasn't unleashed the big shots, but if he does it now then this should become more interesting.

That was a big one and shows he can make those distances.

We've got echoes of the first match when Jamie Overton started smacking it everywhere.

Pavan Rathnayake has now officially cut loose!

Rehan Ahmed is mullered into the stands by Rathnayake, who goes down on one knee and slog sweeps to devastating effect.

A couple of balls later and Jeffrey Vandersay reverse sweeps Ahmed for four.

That's 14 runs off the over and Sri Lanka having a bit of go here. Five overs left.

  19. SL 283-8published at 44 overs

Four singles off an Adil Rashid before Pavan Rathnayake goes down on one knee and helps one slipped down the leg side on its sway with a hearty biff.

There was a brief chance of a catch for Rehan Ahmed but it would have been quite a spectacular grab.
