Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka: "I know there are a few areas we need to improve, especially fast bowling. Until then I think it all went very good.

"We knew that the first 25 overs it wasn't going to spin. Suddenly I think after the 25th-30th over it started, and we bowled really well."

Looks like we actually might have to go through the qualifiers for the 50-over World Cup, which is pretty embarrassing.

It's good for England that Duckett has finally found some form.

  5. 'Sri Lanka challenged us in a lot of different departments'published at 16:54 GMT 22 January

England captain Harry Brook speaking to TNT Sports: "[The toss] proved very crucial in the end. Sri Lanka played a very good game and deserved the victory."

On bowling: "We bowled really well through the middle. Spinners bowled exceptionally well. But they got hold of us in the last over - but that's part of one-day and white-ball cricket.

"They've got extremely good spinners who were able to get enough out of the surface. They challenged us in a lot of different departments."

On Joe Root and Ben Duckett: "They both came off and said it was hard to start. But unfortunately we lost a few of wickets in quick succession and that always puts you on the backfoot."

A quick reminder of how that second innings went...

England lost Zak Crawley for six early on, but Ben Duckett and Joe Root struck 62 and 61 respectively in a 117-run partnership.

It would have been a solid platform to accelerate from, but Sri Lanka's spinners strangled England's middle order, with the tourists losing 5-36.

Jos Buttler was quiet with 19 from 20 balls but Rehan Ahmed (27 from 21) and Jamie Overton (34 from 17) put in enterprising cameos to briefly offer the faintest of hope.

Overton was the last man out for England as they were dismissed 252 with four balls to go in their innings.

Surely the aim of this series is to get players acclimatised especially to turning surfaces that most won't have encountered in Australia. Be nice to win the other matches but sensible play in the conditions is important too before the competition starts.

Player of the match Dunith Wellalage speaking to TNT Sports: "I came out to the wicket and wanted to give some support. The last three overs, we planned to bat and score some runs. I think the most important thing was pace variation and the line was important."

The key here was spin, it was always going to be on a pitch like this. The figures show the pressure on the opening bowlers.

How important were those 23 runs off the final over now....

    David Williams, Blyth

It's that last over that will make the difference between the two teams. If only!

The bitter irony is if Overton had bowled a 'tidy' last over England could have sneaked that and he'd be a hero.

Jamie Overton couldn't do it all. There was still that vaguest of chance for him to keep striking.

Again, England must learn lessons from this.

Well England and Root had that under control. Credit to Sri Lanka for that total and then making the advantage count of bowling under the lights on a slow surface and fielding so well. Overton almost made up for his last over bowling.

    And that's the game.

Jamie Overton mis-times a shot off a full toss from Pramod Madushan and it loops up for an easy catch in the covers.

The umpires check it's not a no ball on height, but it's a simple check to confirm it's a legitimate delivery.

Dunith Wellalage, fittingly, is the fielder - he finishes the game with two catches, 2-41 with the ball and 25 from 12 deliveries with the bat.

England suffer another defeat at the start of this three-match series.

Good news, Overton is back looking at the ball and he's struck that absolutely spot on.

Jamie Overton ploughs Asitha Fernando's second ball high in the air, but the players running in from the off side boundary can't reach the ball before it drops.

Adil Rashid runs well to secure the two and get Overton back on strike, and the seaming all-rounder delivers two deliveries later, launching the ball onto the balconies half way up the stand at mid-wicket.

He adds another four from the next delivery with a smart clip in front of square, bringing up England's 250.

A nudge into the leg side completes the over and sees Overton retain the strike.

It is the power game that is needed now.

It may be a losing cause, but Jamie Overton is enjoying himself.

He sends Pramod Madushan's second delivery through square for four, then sears the fourth through the covers for another boundary.

One more single moves him to 21 from nine balls.
