Fundamentally, I think that England need Sam Curran in the Test squad. The innovation that he brings could be pivotal to this new Bazball mentality.

Small alarm here as the Sri Lanka batters open up.

Liam Dawson came back well there.

    SL 90-2

After seven runs from Adil Rashid's over, Liam Dawson comes in and restricts Sri Lanka to one run.

And with that, it’s time for a short drinks break at the R Premadasa Stadium, with this contest finely balanced.

This is classic middle‑overs ODI cricket: singles ticking along, but Sri Lanka will need one batter to break the shackles soon.

But sometimes, even the best can be made to look ordinary.

And that's what Kusal Mendis does in the penultimate delivery of Adil Rashid's latest over, launching into a late cut to find the fourth boundary of his fledgling innings.

People talk about making the most of watching Root bat while we can. Well the same can be said about Rashid bowling. He’s a master and probably irreplaceable.

It has been a frustrating run of games for Pathum Nissanka in ODIs. In his last four ODIs, he has scored 20+ on each occasion without managing to cross 30 runs.

This is also the first instance where Sam Curran has picked up a wicket in an ODI with his 'moon ball', a delivery with which he has had a considerable amount of success in T20s in the last year.

For context, the speed of his wicket ball was lower than each of Rehan Ahmed's deliveries in his first over today.

It's an expensive over from Liam Dawson and not one England would have wanted ideally.

The spinner gifts the hosts five wides with a delivery that runs away to the boundary before Kusal Mendis slices him towards third to find the rope again.

A total of 11 runs coming in that over for Sri Lanka.

That's where you need to score your runs. When you see batters taking on spinners down the ground, you feel as if they've got a feel for what's coming to them.

We haven't mentioned Dhananjaya de Silva since he came in after the fall of Kamil Mishara.

But he announces himself with a well-timed shot off Adil Rashid, hitting it right past the bowler for his first boundary.

Rehan Ahmed has come on so much after a really good year with promoted Leicestershire.

Batting and bowling really exciting. Now England need to play him whenever possible and make sure he doesn’t get ahead of himself.

His Leicestershire coach Alfonso Thomas said Rehan started to enjoy his cricket again. Something which only gets you so far but things falling into place for Rehan Ahmed.

  12. SL 65-2published at 15 overs

England want Rehan Ahmed to pile the pressure on Sri Lanka from the other end.

But after a good start to the over, the leg-spinner is punished for his wide line with back-to-back boundaries by Kusal Mendis.

Let’s brighten up the past mistakes of the previous two months and put some pride back into wearing an England shirt, we know you can do it, show us!

Looking forward to what should be a far too strong England team getting back on track. 50 overs about the right amount of time for an England innings judging by the winter so far!

Mishara wasn't able to pick up on that googly. He moved outside the line of that delivery. Poor shot.

    Bowled him!

Sri Lanka lose both openers as Kamil Mishara goes for the sweep but misses the googly from Adil Rashid completely and pays the price in the form of his wicket.

Rashid has his first wicket of the day and England are firmly on top here now.

Spin from both ends now as Rehan Ahmed joins fellow leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Only two runs from the over.

  17. SL 51-1published at 12 overs

Adil Rashid comes into the attack now and he keeps things tight in his first over.

England will want to build on that breakthrough and will hope Rashid can turn the screws.

  18. SL 50-1published at 11 overs

A wicket and just one run from Sam Curran's over.

Kusal Mendis is the new Sri Lanka batter and he begins by defending the first three deliveries he has faced.

That's what happens to a batter when he's in defensive mode. He fails to hit the ball because he's just been sat in his crease. There's no power and no elevation

Door is open Sam Curran’s variation coming off. Nissanka and Mishara were starting to look a bit anxious and Nissanka first to fall.
