European Championships: Day six schedule & BBC coverage

Great Britain remain in contention for top spot in the medal table with just two days to go in the first European Athletics Championships to be held in this country.

Among their strongest medal hopes still to come at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium are 1500m runners Georgia Hunter Bell and Jake Wightman, Commonwealth Games long jump champion Jazmin Sawyers and five relay teams.

Athletes from 49 nations are competing for a total of 50 gold medals - including a mixed 4x100m relay for the first time - and there are 10 world champions and seven Olympic champions taking part.

One of those, the Swedish pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis, will look to win gold on the final day of action on Sunday.

Sprinter Amy Hunt is targeting a record four gold medals at these championships in a bid to become "iconic".

The confident 24-year-old won the 100m on Monday and the 200m on Thursday and is aiming to follow that up by winning the women's 4x100m relay on Saturday and the mixed 4x100m relay on Sunday.

"Yes, I am looking to be iconic," she told BBC Sport. "I want to do what nobody has ever done before.

"I think this is the perfect place to do it. I am an East Midlands girl, and I am from Newark.

"This is the closest I am ever going to get to a home crowd in my entire career."

Dina Asher-Smith has won six European golds, two silvers and one bronze from five championships and could equal the record of seven golds to become the most successful athlete in the history of the competition.

Two athletes jointly hold that record - Croatian discus thrower Sandra Elkasevic (formerly Perkovic) and Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who picked up his seventh title with men's 5,000m victory on the opening night in Birmingham.

Asher-Smith finished sixth in her opening event, the women's 100m, and won bronze in the 200m. She is expected to compete for either the mixed or women's 4x100m relay.

The 30-year-old could also draw level with fellow sprinter Irena Szewinska of Poland as the most-decorated European athlete of all time. Szewinska won a total of 10 medals from 1966-1978.

Of other current female athletes, Dutch star Femke Broeders-Bol has five golds and two bronze medals.

Matthew Hudson-Smith, who has a stand at Alexander Stadium named after him, became the joint-most decorated European male athlete of all-time by claiming a dominant 400m gold on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old secured his eighth medal at the championships to equal French sprinter Christophe Lemaitre's record medal tally for men.

His fifth gold medal overall also brought him level with Roger Black and Sir Mo Farah as the British men to have won most European titles.

Hudson-Smith, who could add to his total in the men's 4x400m relay final on Sunday, also matched Asher-Smith's British record of eight European medals, although Asher-Smith has one more gold.

Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the most successful European male athlete of all time with seven golds.
