Nature FeaturesYou are in: Somerset > Nature > Nature Features > Lytes Cary walk ![]() The Lytes family were of Norman descent Lytes Cary walkA two mile walk around the National Trust's Lytes Cary Manor estate where you have views of the surrounding countryside looking out towards Yeovil and smaller villages.
The walk takes about an hour to complete and is along fairly level ground and you can pick up guides of the walk from the estate as well. There are far reaching views to nearby villages like Charlton Adam and Charlton Mackrell. If you take your binoculars you can see plenty of wildlife and nature boards have been put up to help you spot birds and insects along the River Cary and the surrounding countryside. Taking you on this tour is Simon Larkin, head gardener at Lytes Cary Manor. Lytes Cary River WalkStart at the car park at the main gate (you can pick up laminated maps here of this particular walk) Follow the footpath and head towards the copse At the copse walk to far end of the field where you will come to a small B road. Turn left over the bridge and walk along the River Cary heading towards a wooden footbridge From the wooden footbridge, walk to another bridge at a new copse Continuing along the river there are old pollarded willows and the path leads to a pond with a wooden viewing platform From the pond walk along to another arable field, turn left, next to the cherry orchard where there are views of Queen Camel, Yeovilton air base, and views of the A37 Turn right, up a short climb, by the orchard, where there are views of the Lytes Cary estate, and Yeovilton village Walk through the gateway, along a short track which leads to the back of the manor house, where the walk ends. last updated: 04/03/2009 at 12:09 SEE ALSOYou are in: Somerset > Nature > Nature Features > Lytes Cary walk |
