Wells Walk

Find out why Wells is back to front through this guided walk, telling you about the lesser known facts of the England's smallest city.

Wells Walk

This a half an hour walk around Wells and tells you a little more about the city's history, apart from its most famous landmark, Wells Cathedral.

Taking you on this tour is Lavinia Bryne, a Wells City Councillor, who also runs guided tours over the summer months.

You can get more information from the Tourist Information Centre next to the Town Hall about this walk, but here are some basic directions if you want to have a go yourself:

Tour of Wells

Start your tour outside the Town Hall, facing the market place. Then skirt round to the left going to the back of the Town Hall.

Keep walking down the road past the back of Somerfield, which featured in 'Hot Fuzz' and take the first right up Guardhouse Lane.

At the end turn right into the High Street and walk up to the Market Place.

Cross over towards the top left-hand side where you will find Peniless Porch, a gateway on to the Cathedral Green.

Walk to a spot in front of the Cathedral and then walk round the left or north side of the building past the clock and turn left into the Vicars Close.

Retrace your footsteps back to the Market Place and this time take the other big gateway to see the Bishop's Palace and moat.
