President: Negotiation only solution | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga said war is not the solution to Sri Lanka’s national question. A long lasting solution could only be found through negotiations with Tamil Tigers, she said. In an apparent attack to government’s coalition partner Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), she said that it was naïve to keep arguing on certain words or phrases than trying to find a solution to the problem. Speaking at a rally held on Sunday after opening the second phase of “Dahasak Vew” (thousands of tanks) project in Kahatagasdigiliya, Anuradhapura, President Kumaratunga avoided directly mentioning the JVP. But in another apparent attack on the JVP, she said people who oppose the restructuring of CEB are forcing the collapse of other government-owned institutions.
According to the president, Peoples Bank is on the verge of collapse due to huge unpaid debts such as Ceylon Electricity Board’s (CEB) Rs. 900,000 million. The JVP introduced "Dahasak Vew" project to renovate tanks in the rural areas. President made these remarks in the presence of ministers Anura Kumara Dissanayake, KD Lal Kantha and deputy minister Bimal Ratnayake, who are senior leaders of the JVP. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Chief Minister of the North-Central Province Berty Premalal Dissanayake also attended the meeting. President Kumaratunga was seen having a friendly discussion with the Agriculture minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake after the speech. |
