May day for joint mechanism
Relief and rehabilitation
Tsunami relief
Trade Union Centre for the Right of Rebuilding the Country(TURRC) says Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna(JVP) should not make the "proposed tsunami relief joint mechanism" a problem.

JVP has not clarified why they opposed to it. However, this mechanism is to provide for the people who have been victimised by the tsunami disaster, TURRC convenor Ravi Kumudesh

"They deserved to be helped out by tsunami aid which is meant for them. International community has donated aid for their benifit and that money belonged to them",he said.

The aid Sri Lanka got has received through nearly forty thousand people who became tsunami victims. Therefore, there is no need for programmes of rebuilding the country, or any other on going programme for that matter. Relief should be provided according to the aspirtions of the affected people in the country, TURRC said.

There are fishing communities in large numbers in the coastal areas affected very badly but little has been done to upgrade the situation they are now in, TURRC said.

Ravi Kumudesh said this May Day will be a platform to urge tsunami relief as a matter of urgency and to draw the attention of the authorities to take propmpt action.

"We are also opposed to moves by the goverment to suppress trade union activities. We will not allow privatisation", TURRC convenor, Ravi Kumudesh added.
