4) Give respect to other water users. Whether they are a surfer, body boarder or canoeist, they are looking to have fun, just like you. If you share waves and have a laugh, you will enjoy your experience much more. All it takes is one selfish tit with an attitude to spoil half a dozen other water users' sessions – be part of the solution not the problem.

5) Get a lesson.
With the exception of half a dozen surfers on the south east coast of Scotland, going quickly back to basics would help the vast majority improve and enjoy the sea with other users. There is now no excuse, with three surf schools in the central belt!

6) Get a nose guard.
If you ride a short board, get a nose guard as you can seriously damage yourself and others.

7) Get surfing insurance.
The British Surf Association (BSA) offers third party surf insurance in case you get damaged or hurt someone else. This was never needed in Scotland until the last few years (due to numbers), but it should be considered by all surfers now.

8) Leave the beach or break as you found it (or better).
Scotland has some of the best beaches in the world and ample room to camp wild. Please keep it this way by tiding up after you.

9) Finally, don’t drop in!
The person nearest the peak of the wave (the point that breaks first) has right of way – don’t take their wave!
