 | | | | | | | | | | | You were saying the other day how pros like Rodney Mullen are now seen completely different ways. Can you tell us more about that?
Well back in the early eighties, it was like freestyle was for geeks and street skating was where it was. And, I dunno, freestylers used to wear pastel blue and pale pink [laughs]!
So was the divide between freestylers and street skaters much more pronounced?
Oh totally, totally! Like naebody wanted to do freestyle. Everyone wanted to be a street skater. It was just like, for everyone I skated with, freestyle was a taboo.
What skate style would you like to see making a comeback?
Sleeveless T-Shirts and Rector pads: red and yellow Rectors, bring them back!
Which other skaters in Scotland do you rate?
Everybody. Anyone thats willing to push a board.
What inspires you to skate?
I dunno, its just the fulfilment of it. I dunno, I need to skate.
Do you have a trick or combo that youre really proud of pulling?
I was quite chuffed when I started ollying over couches. Impossibles; I was quite chuffed with them. Thats when you ollie and then wrap the board end over end, around your back foot.
Do you ever get angry and frustrated when skating and how do you overcome the frustration?
I try not to. But just leave it and come back to it. Dont persist with the same stuff. Dont learn mistakes.
What do you think about skate groupies?
Theyre too young [laughs].
So theyre fine, they just need to be older?
Yup.
If you could skate one place in Scotland every day, where would it be?
Right now, probably Perth. Its the smooth, concrete bowls.
