Why are you so big? I drank a lot of milk as a wee man.
Do you take steroids? Nope.
Why can't you do a turndown? I've never learned it.
What is the secret to making good trails? Practice, like anything else. I suppose if you had someone to show you how to do it you could learn but I never had that. We just built stuff and if it worked it worked. If it didn't you change it. You eventually work out what's good and what works after doing that for years.
What is the difference between a turndown and a lookdown? One starts with turn and the other starts with look?
36's or 48's? 36 front, 48 back at the moment, depending on the number of broken spokes I'm running at any one time that is!
What are your favourite pegs? Invisible ones.
Top 5 places you've ever ridden? The Field Melville Sidley Trails Unit 23 spine Seventies Warehouse (just wish I was less hungover)
Who is radder - you or Drew? Drew.
Salt 'n sauce or salt 'n vinegar? Just sauce please, love.
Having attended the Urban Games in Clapham Common in August 2000 and subsequently stayed at the Yeti's abode, did you or did you not, partake in the kebab that was proffered to you by your host? Shat It!
Is your main inspiration for riding Gary Forsyth, he of MRD Badlander fame? Pass.
When flicking through your old copies of BMX Action Bike do you find yourself involuntarily getting aroused? Young, fit boys with tight bright coloured BMX suits. What do you think?
Do you know, or have ever heard of, a man named Hugh Morris? No.
I knew a biker who took all his pegs and brakes off in the name of fashion - he consequently was hit by a van. What's your views on this? No brakes - No brains.
Will chrome ever make a comeback? Fashion is cyclic so yeah, I think it will.
Did you use Eddies 'Andles back in the day? I used a Raleigh Striker 'back in the day'. Didn't start riding properly til the early '90s.
I want to get my picture in a BMX magazine but I am crap - will you or Tom Nunn take a photo of me and recommend that it gets published?"- from Scott Timmens Yeah sure, anything for a mate.
How many pedals can you do? How many do you want?
Questions from Keith:
What's your favourite flavour of ice pole to put in your whiskey? Cola.
When watching the Mike Tyson fight one night at a lock-in, how many times did you fall asleep? Roughly 57. Come on, it was light outside when we left after all.
How do you feel about The Field not being there any more? The Field died before it was ever flattened so I'd already moved on. In a way I'm glad it did eventually get flattened because I think it was sadder seeing all the jumps just lying there unkept and not being used.
When the field was in full swing, how much digging did you do each day? Too much digging and not enough riding.
What's the fastest you've driven your car? The speedo only goes to 100 so it's hard to tell.
Who do you ride with most? I still ride with Drew more than anyone else.
What does the saying 'going out for a few games of pool' mean? It means I'm going out for a few games of pool. The seven pints that always follows is purely coincidental.
What's the worst bail you've ever had (not including post-beer ones)? I've been pretty lucky with not having too many bad falls but knocking my teeth out at Livi was the worst. Cheers for finding my teeth on the flat bottom by the way. I don't think I've ever said that.
What's your favourite Sound Garden song? That's tough! Jesus Christ Pose for its energy.
How did the Barn come about (and how did it die)? Well after you found the barn, me and Drew were able to scam all the old wood from Unit 23 when they re-sheeted the ramps and that gave us enough to build a lot of good stuff. It's just a shame neds had to set it all on fire. It was good while it lasted.
Question from Drew:
Where does your motivation come from - constantly keeping the scene together and moving forward? I don't know really. I just need to ride. I suppose I do things to get people out riding or make things to ride because of that. Having people to ride with and places to ride is the only way to satisfy that need.
Question from Tom: 'You're a big guy, are you packin' large?' You knows it!
Thanks Ste.
Dave
Ps. Can I say thanks to Grant for helping me out with everything and thanks to Euan and Neil at OBM for doing the same. And thanks to you for the interview. Cheers.
