"The number of personnel at the time in the company I worked for, it would be heavy handed as far as apprentices were concerned. There seemed to be a preponderance of apprentices. This of course, I believe, was because of the cheap labour costs for apprentices. The apprentices were obviously a lot cheaper than journeymen to hire. There was a good turn over of apprenticeships. That in itself was a good thing because it meant that young men were being trained….. The apprenticeship that these young men acquired stood them in good stead, as it stood me in good stead for the rest of my life."
