Teachers

This site is primarily designed for students studying The Cone-Gatherers by Robin Jenkins as part of the Higher English syllabus. It can be used to support the Textual Analysis section of the curriculum at both Higher and Intermediate 2 level, and can also help with development of close reading skills.

The site is structured very simply. We’ve chosen four extracts from the novel and for each, look at what it says about theme, about character and how the structure and style of writing adds to the meaning. Sentences, phrases and words are picked out and full interpretation provided, to show students best practice in text analysis.

In addition, audio interviews with teachers and writers bring a personal perspective to interpretation. For this reason, we recommend ensuring pupils wear headphones when using the site in class. We’ve also included three additional extracts for students to print out and analyse on their own.

You can see an overview of the site’s structure on the site map page.

Downloading interactive content

Because of the interactive nature of the site, it may take a little while to download all the content. If you’re planning to use the site in class, we recommend you take time beforehand to open each page and let the material download. Although this may take a few minutes, it means that the pages will then be cached by your machine and should open immediately next time you access the site.

Suggested activities
  • Print out copies of an extract and ask students to work through it, highlighting what they think is interesting. Use this as a basis for classroom discussion, with students explaining their choices. (develops critical awareness of the text)Pupils work through an extract looking at character or theme. They then select another extract from the book which they think complements the extract from the site. What new light does their choice shed on the character or theme? How does it build on and develop what’s gone before? (good preparation for Critical Essay question in paper 2)
  • For students studying other texts, use the site as a model for deconstruction of text. Work through an example, then try an extract from a text students are familiar with, looking at what’s important in terms of character, theme, style and structure. (highlights technical awareness, useful preparation for Textual Analysis internal assessment.)
