  GILLES PETERSON (UK)
Full track details
There was a time when, for all but an enlightened few, the boundaries between jazz, dance, hip hop, soul, rave, house, African and Latin music were as real and restricting as the Iron Curtain. It took the vision of a small but dedicated cell of blue-sky peering Djs and musicians to break things down, mash things up and knit these disparate tribes into a whole new scene.
Bubbling up through pioneering pirate radio stations like Invicta, jazz dance nights at the Electric Ballroom, and the late 1970s south London soul boy scene came Gilles Peterson. A self-confessed 'classic trainspotter' and vinyl junkie, Peterson soon made a name for himself as a DJ in the hard nosed jazz, soul and funk dance hotspots of the capital. When Acid House and Rave culture hit London in the mid 1980s, Peterson was in pole position to bring together ravers and jazz dancers, suburban casuals and inner city groovers, blacks and whites, nu skool and old skool under the spell of his own unique blend of all the various club styles that were kicking off at that time.
Through his now legendary Sunday 'Talking Loud and Saying Something' club sessions at Dingwalls in London and pioneering labels like Acid Jazz and Talking Loud, Peterson et all instigated a mini cultural revolution which, although multifaceted, boils down to a basic recognition that black music...soul, jazz, funk, drum and bass, house, Latin, you name it...belongs to one big family and if you like branch, there's no reason not to like another.
His radio shows on Radio London, Jazz FM and Kiss FM have helped to spread the Peterson gospel across the nation. Nowadays his fans are every bit as obsessive as they ever were, and they can be found in every funky burgh from Tokyo to Tallahasee thanks to Peterson's weekly BBC Radio 1 outing 'Worldwide', which is syndicated to the four points of the compass. Peterson's CD compilations, from the early 'Jazz Juice' platters through 'The Incredible Sound Of...' to his recent 'Gilles Peterson in Brazil' on Ether Records have also had a catalytic effect on musical tastes throughout the world, far in excess of the recognition they have received in the mainstream media.
Now that Peel has left us, there are very few who can hope to ever match the depth and breath of influence he had on the musical life of a generation, or two. Blessed with that you-never-know-what-he'll-play-next magic, Gilles Peterson is definitely one of the few.

I thought I knew "world music". Where have I been????????????? Ian England
considering how he picked fat freddys drop from welly nz to be a huge success i will forever have faith in man mike te aro
Gilles has always been there as a marker of the scene that seeks to break down sub-cultures and genres within music. Starting with African American Jazz, Soul and Funk the journey has spread out across the globe. A major backer of Brazilian music and could be noted for bringing all the M.P.B. that festoons the TV advertising these days and has made Brazil a much more household name in style. Afrobeat and much more, regularly and in chorus with modern urban western dancemusic. The ideas of "worldwide", although do not stick to what could be called "a strict world music diet" im sure that we can all see that the Live nominees for this years awards are not all classical representatives of their culture's music. Its at the point where the traditional joins with the modern and fuses into the global culture. At that point things go "worldwide" and at that point you'll find Gilles. Gil K.
how do you say his first name? juana, cadiz, espanya.
An innovator of musical styles, Gilles is never scared of crossing the boundries. Incredibly far-sighted musically, always looking ahead, a huge influence on me and many others, outstanding as a DJ and producer. Thoroughly deserves the accolades. Paul Mcshane, London
What purpose is this award I dont get it ? It seems that everything has to be neatly defined, to me theres just bad, good and better music, Gilles just knows whats good and plays it on Radio 1 and in clubs regardless of where its from, I imagine he doesnt conciously play WORLD music. Keeping his job on R1 with a series of successful cds compilations/ good ratings, djing all over the planet are all the assurances a dj / label man needs. joachin / London
the best world music ever selected, most of it brasilian. No dobt that he is the "author" that carries the spirit of the classic and the worth modern style Ivan Dimov - Bulgaria
Keep inspiring for all the heads worldwide that know genre titles are only words, the true spirit is in the groove, transcending all boundaries. It all starts with a beat--it's a global thang...
Joaquin "dj wyzeone" Munoz, Northern California
I've just discovered this guy through the CD 'In Brazil'. This is a DJ that knows exactly the kind of music I love to hear but can never find - thanks Giles! Freya, Midlands
i cant beleive how screwed up the world music awards are giles p - come on what about uk world music, the Asian Crossover, the Turkish Crossover Its a kind of intelectual snobbery that absolutely ignores the amazing Uk stuff and comes up with Giles Peterson Come on even Giles would support Oojami`s and Ska Cubanos Just what vsort of ectraction device is needed to get the heads of your commitee into "the real World" only fRED Dibnah would now. chris london
I can say in very little words,Gilles Piterson gave music ears the love again. We know that the musics around but so hard to find. At one time i thought about giving up the life of a dj because i thought i was the only one. I was in Los Angeles when i was first turned on to GP back in 1996. I got the bug again after many years of giving up on radio thanks GP... Rodney(re'odd)Franklin USA
For over 15 years I've listened to what this man is playing. Always fresh, even the oldies. adam wallace, nyc usa
GP is the man. No boundaries in his style...in his own words..."John Coltrane to Kurt Kobain". He's given breaks to DJ's and bands that would NEVER have been given breaks by any other DJ, especially not on Radio 1. Oli Edinburgh
The energy, drive and shear taste in music from contemporary cutting edge sounds to timeless (sometimes seemingly obscure) classics, makes listening to Gilles - & thus being a part of his world - a pleasure and an imspiration. Keep pushing the boundaries and making me think! Strachs, Leeds, UK
