Chips, flatulence and teen spirit

As the great poet Will Smith once said "It's funny how a smell can spark off nostalgia...". Funny indeed. I won't tell you how long it's been since I last set foot in a school but lets put it this way, school registers were purple books with ticks in and not the fancy computerised thingy-majigs. Yes a long time indeed. Having said that within seconds of setting foot in school the smell of school dinner, flatulence and teenage attitude brought it all crashing back. It was great watching the kids fall into two very simple categories; those who were delighted to see Edith roll up at their school and those who had to pretend they weren't slightly chuffed about it.

She owns the gaff

Star Pupil for Monday was Katie... A girl who spends an hour a day doing her hair before turning up at school to run the gaff. Bursting with confidence Katie swanned around the school, hanging out with The Ordinary Boys, doing the Album Chart and generally acting like she was born for this day. Her brother was cool too, he'd played at the Reebok Stadiun and no doubt one day he'll captain Man United. You see, some people are born lucky and some people are born talented, but the people who really make it are those who are both lucky and talented. I never got to play at Old Trafford and cool bands never came to play at my school.... says it all really.

Crossing the country for Cross Country

Well after finishing a rousing karaoke version of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' on the coach (thanks to Scott for playing that on his show, a bit of tuneless singing has cured my coach sickness nicely), Huey has ordered me to get on with writing something for the blog. Hanging around all these bossy teachers is obviously having an effect on him. So we have come through to end of our first day in one piece and what a great day it was!

I knew going back to school was going to be freaky having not gone back for *cough* number of years, but when we dropped Katie (our winner) off at the school, the enthusiastic reaction of the kids was really pretty overwhelming. Seeing the girls IN PE doing cross country didn't bring back such great memories however - whilst I actually used to enjoy the running bit, it was always tarnished by the knowledge that after cross country you HAD TO HAVE A SHOWER. No excuses. Which was obviously not a good thing and something to be truly dreaded.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what other school memories are unearthed over the next week - hopefully not all of them as scary as my old PE teachers... Headlice report: None sighted at present.

I'm starving

The plan was to have lunch at school but the sight of beans and cheese on chips put me off whilst at the same time explaining the invisible clouds of flatulence hovering around the corridors and classrooms. We're on the bus and i've just had to take the pics of the team for the blog... OMG - more self conscious than some of the kids we came across today. Megan had 4 costume changes and called a mobile make-up artist to meet her roadside, Natalie had her hair re-styled whilst Roachy insisted on photo approval. Will didn't give a toss how he looked in his pic and we did it on one shot... I think there is a phrase about polishing a bodily function that explains why Will is always gonna be a one shot guy.

Speaking of Will it was his birthday last night but because we got in so late we never got around to have the birthday drinks he's been promising all week. So, it's birthday bumps for him tonight and seeing as it's Star Pupil we'll celebrate teenage styleeee by swilling down some alchopops, getting all emotional and telling our collegues that we'll love each other until the day we die. Day one and I can see it all going Pete Tong from here on in... Out of school reports in the morning.

The Gossip.

Hey! So first up let me explain who I am and what I do. Normally I produce Sara Cox but for Star Pupil I am the project producer. This means I'm responsible for dealing with all the registrations you sent in to Radio 1 online, dealing with the schools and engineers and generally making sure everything runs smoothly. But I know what you all really want to know is the gossip from the tour bus so here goes...

Yesterday was a momentous occasion as most of the Star Pupil team bought the same black wolly hat! These were bought after we travelled 2 hours outside of London and realised we were heading for snow without any proper clothing! Needless to say we now have lots of the same black hats lying around the bus no knowing who's is whose.. I did offer to sew everyone's initials in the hat but to be honest I can't really sew so i'm hoping everyone forgets my kind offer.

Talking of the tour bus, let me run through the rules on board: No healthy or nutritional food to be consumed at any time, NO number 2's, Seat Belts are a compulsory oh and Will has just set a new one as well - no brainteaser games on his Nintendo Lite - he's still sulking after his 7 year old beat him the last time he played it.

As I write this the coach is fairly quiet - Edith is fast asleep with her tour hat on, Producer Richard is also asleep but has yet to dribble, Will and Piers are trying unsuccessfully to play their golfing computer game and Huey is busy uploading photos from todays show. Tomorrow's show is set to be just as good as today's - Obviously I can't say where we're going but the school is great and they're really up for Radio 1 spending the day disrupting classes and creating general mayhem.

My butt is going numb.

Whenever you ask Steve, the coach driver, how long it will take, he always tells us an hour. ALWAYS. He told me that 2 hours ago. Thank god for the on board loo, otherwise this would be a damp blog. The novelty of coach travel is wearing off - and we are well and truly lost in the suburbs of.... oops nearly gave it away. strongly considering buying him sat nav.
