Brit Awards 2005
Brits25: The winners react
Last updated 10 February 2005

The Scissor Sisters with their awards

Brits25 belonged to the Scissors Sisters last night (Wednesday).

They were partying back at their hotel with Snow Patrol and Simon Pegg into the early hours. They scooped all three awards they were nominated for and had the most outrageous performance of the night.

Jake, in tight tan trousers and braces, and Ana jumped out of golden eggs. They were joined on stage by a 10ft pink bird and singing watermelons. The band were very excited by the time they collected their third award, but how are they going to share them?

"We're going to chop the heads off and probably do it that way."

"We'll probably do a weekend programme. Babydaddy gets them Saturday, Sunday. I come Monday, we hang out for a couple of days. Share it like that."

"We're together so much that we can just put it on the front of the bus."

"Yeah, we're just going to mount it on the front of the tour bus. It can be our hood ornament. I've decided when this rock and roll thing is dried up, I'm just going to go and be a watermelon."

They also told us we can expect new material from them this year:

"We have a couple of songs in the can."

"We haven't stopped for a year and a half so there's not much we can say about it, except for next month it will be time to knuckle down and make another album."

"Baby Daddy has been learning the banjo, so you'll be hearing some banjo on the next record!"

"It's not just going to be banjo solos it's going to be like - Steve Vai, go get a life my friend!"

Franz Ferdinand with their awards

Jake bumped into Franz Ferdinand backstage, the band picked up Best Group and Best Rock Act, there was lots of mutual appreciation and they even made their statues kiss.

Although Franz picked up two awards, a confused Alex and Nick had their own ideas about what they won:

"One of them was Best Band in the World and the other one was Best Band in the Universe."

"We got both so we covered everything!"

"What's the difference, I don't get it? I know one is Best Group and one is Best Rock Band."

"I think it's kind of cool because we're a rock band and a pop group at the same time, so I like that!"

"I do like the pop group thing, but we are a rock band as well!"

They also admitted to making the most of their first Brits25 award ceremony, they were a bit tiddly but managed to give us some detail about their new album:

"It's going really well. We've just written a few new songs. It's sounding amazingly good, I must say, well for me anyway."

"There are the songs we have been playing live, we did 'Your Diary', 'This Boy', 'What You Said' and 'Do You Wanna'. 'Do You Wanna' is exceptionally saucy."

"We wrote one yesterday which was really good fun to play. Sometimes you write a tune and it's a catchy pop tune and you're like 'Wow, let's play that one again, that was a good laugh'."

Keane with their awards

Keane were quite emotional when they picked up their awards for Best Album and Best British Breakthrough voted for by Radio 1 listeners.

They were so overcome they forgot to thank someone and wanted to make amends backstage:

"I think one of Tom's highlights was meeting Jo Whiley again. Because if I could say he is a big fan of Jo..."

"It was especially nice to get an award from her."

"It was so great, because lots of Radio 1 listeners had got involved in voting for the Best Breakthrough Act. Then she opened the envelope up and she said 'Oh my God, I really wanted them to win,' and it was us!"

"It was great. She's given us so much support, we're very thankful for that and everyone who voted for us."

They're heading back to the States for the rest of their tour now but Tom told us they're looking forward to getting more time in the studio this year:

"I think that's one of the most exciting things that we are going to get to do this year - last year was just touring solidly."

"We've got a few good songs up our sleeve, we think so anyway, and we're just excited about getting them down and seeing what people think."

"I hope that we've got a good album in the pipeline for you."

Robbie and Joss on stage

It was a good night for Joss Stone too, she won Best British Female and Best Urban. She also performed twice, once solo and then sang 'Angels' with Robbie Williams.

Robbie was very hands on on-stage and admitted backstage that he fancied Joss:

"Her boyfriend's here which makes it a bit difficult!"

"I've just realised that I am not as young as I used to be, because I always used to be Robbie - the youngest member of Take That."

"Then I left, and I was still young, and now I'm going to be thirty-one next week, and she's like seventeen!"

But Robbie's a fickle man - he soon had his attention switched to another young lady:

"Oh, I'm just watching Jamelia on the screen now - she's fit! She's lovely, what great legs!"

Although Joss is really loved up with her boyfriend she told us she thinks Robbie's a perfect gent.

"He is so much fun, so much fun to sing with."

"He's really nice and really down to earth. He ain't no diva. He can sing, and he can write. I really respect that guy as a musician and as a person, he's really cool."

"You know what, the second I came out I just put the lyric sheet on the floor. I had to read it just before I went out."

Robbie collecting his award from Matt Lucas and David Walliams

Robbie won Best Song in 25 Years for 'Angels', his 15th Brit Award. He apologised backstage for forgetting to thank Guy Chambers.

It was announced that Gary Barlow and Howard from Take That were going to hand out his award and there was pure shock on Robbie's face - then Matt Lucas and David Walliams came on dressed up as them. He was totally relieved.

He told Radio 1 he'd spoken to the 'Little Britain' stars the day before and asked what they were going to do, but they wouldn't tell him and he got a bit miffed about it:

"I actually felt a little put out that they didn't trust me. Little did I know."

"It was a real heart-in-mouth moment. I genuinely thought Gary and Howard were going to come down those stairs. I didn't know how to apologise to them for everything bad that I'd said and accept an award at the same time. So I'm glad it was Matt and Dave."

We also asked him how he felt dressing up as a lady for the charity episode of 'Little Britain':

"It was strangely liberating. I enjoyed it."

Tom for McFly celebrates on winning their award

Robbie took time backstage to congratulate McFly and told them he thought they did great videos.

When it was announced they won Best Pop, the McFly lads popped champagne at the table and went to pick up the award drenched in bubbly.

The band were also really chuffed when their heroes Green Day shared their champagne.

Muse with their award

Muse picked up Best Live Act and Dominic and Chris told us why Matt Bellamy wasn't with them to pick up the award:

"Matt's in the Kingdom of Bhutan getting involved with Buddha."

"He says it's the most bizarre thing he's ever seen - I'm going to give him a call in a moment and tell him that we've won, I'm sure he'll be pleased."

"He said that he's seriously sunburnt - he's been in the Phillipines, and has burnt his arse."

"He's probably applying lotion to his buttocks - in the lotus position!"
