Ryan
Born three months premature, Ryan has cerebral palsy, and currently lives at home with his mum in Bolton.
When we last filmed Ryan, he was completing a sports studies degree at a local university. Frustrated by his disability at 14, Ryan is much more independent at 21; learning to drive has given him a huge sense of freedom.
At 14, Ryan was playing wheelchair basketball, but he’s since found the sport that he really wants to excel at – wheelchair rugby, otherwise known as murderball! Recently selected for the GB development squad, his goal is to make the wheelchair rugby team for the Paralympics in Rio in 2016.
Ryan in his own words
We’ve seen you aged seven and 14 – but where are you now?
"I graduated from university which was tough, but got there in the end. I also play wheelchair rugby. In 2012 I was in the GB development squad. I loved every minute of that experience. Life has changed a lot over the 14 years."
Are you following the path you imagined for yourself when you were those ages?
"Yes, sort of. I have always wanted to go to university ever since I was 7."
And how have your relationships changed?
"My relationships with my family has changed a lot. My granddad passed away 2 years ago. This was probably the hardest time of my life. Then, about a year ago I lost touch with my dad, and haven’t seen him since."
Are there any moments you look back on and think ‘perhaps I would have done that differently’?
"No not really."
Where should we expect to find you when Up New Generation returns in seven years' time?
"Hopefully, I'll have a place of my own and I'll have a job."
