Courtney

At seven, Courtney, from Kirkby, a suburb of Liverpool, spent a long time dreaming of travel.

Desperate to go to America and Australia when we first filmed her, by the time we caught up with her at 14 she’d discovered that she was afraid of flying.

Always a serious student, Courtney did two sets of A Levels, whilst mastering a few unusual languages on the side. She had initially wanted to apply to study at Oxford University, before deciding that the cost of living in the South would be prohibitive. At 21, we filmed her at freshers’ week at the University of Liverpool, where she was about to embark on a degree in Law.

Courtney in her own words

We’ve seen you aged seven and 14 – but where are you now?

"I am currently studying Law at the University of Liverpool and I am just about to commence my second year."

Are you following the path you imagined for yourself when you were those ages?

"In some ways I am, as I always intended to attend university, travel and to study languages - I now speak several. In terms of a future career, I am still unsure, but there are a few things that I would like to do, just as at ages seven and 14."

Looking back to those ages, what advice would you give yourself?

"I wouldn’t really advise myself to do anything differently, as I am quite happy with my life up to now. I think really my advice would be not to stress too much or to put too much pressure on myself."

Where should we expect to find you when Up returns in seven years' time?

"Definitely living and working abroad. Ideally I would like to spend the first few years after university teaching English in Europe, Asia and even possibly the Middle East. I try not to plan too far ahead as things can often change. I prefer to live in and enjoy the present and near future."
