Mr Birling is proud of his achievements. From humble beginnings he has built up a very successful business, sits on the local bench of justices and has served as town Mayor. He even entertains hopes of an imminent knighthood.

Despite a fractious relationship with his son, he now looks forward confidently to the future – a future of further growth in his prosperity thanks to the recent engagement of his daughter, Sheila, to the son of his business rival, Lord Croft. Arthur and his wife are absolutely delighted with Sheila’s match. Indeed they are in the midst of wholeheartedly celebrating the news, when Inspector Goole calls.
