Sybil always conducts herself with impeccable manners and strict public propriety, but underneath she hides a snobbish prejudice. Sybil was socially superior to Arthurwhen they married. Nowadays she likes to be seen to do good – and is a prominent member of the Brumley Women’s Charity (an organisation helping women in distress).
She loves her children – although they may feel that her affections verge on the patronising and smothering. Like Arthur she is utterly delighted with Sheila’s engagement to Gerald Croft, feeling that Sheila has secured her entire future through it. When the Inspector begins to cast aspersions on the family’s respectability, Sybil is the most outraged member of the family.
