The son of Albert and Florrie, and brother to Kitty, Adam and Sam, Jack works as a porter at Folkestone Harbour Station. He is - reluctantly - friends with Joe Macknade. In September 1914, Jack enlists to The Buffs, East Kent Regiment after being handed a white feather.
In early 1918, Jack returns to Britain severely weakened after being held in a prisoner of war camp at Sennelager in Germany. His return creates an unexpected love triangle.
