Martha is the tenacious, though pragmatic, union rep in shell-filling sheds at Marshalls Factory in North Shields. A beautiful singer, she has a harmonious relationship with her co-workers, vocalising their concerns about long hours and poor conditions to a predominantly patronising management.
As a munitionette engaged in vital war work, Martha is not permitted to leave her nationally-important, though dangerous, job; her energies are instead directed into the women’s football team, coached by Kenny. Emerging as a star striker, Martha is cheered on by adoring Edie.
