Cimaruta, Naples, Italy. Composite charm with symbols of the goddess Diana (key, moon, etc.), before 1924.

From the Pitt Rivers Museum Amulet Collection

  • Silver balangandan belt charm, Brazil, dates to before 1907.
  • Glass rolling pin, once contained a child’s caul used by fishermen as a charm against drowning, Sunderland, 1855.
  • Belemnite (fossilised cuttlefish) used to protect homes against lightning or ground to a powder to cure mouth disease
  • Talhakimt, Senegal. A type of talisman worn as a pendant to bring prosperity, courage and fertility, before 1931.
  • Mano cornuta (‘horned hand’) amulet to protect against the Evil Eye, Corsica, before 1931.
  • Cimaruta, Naples, Italy. Composite charm with symbols of the goddess Diana (key, moon, etc.), before 1924.
