Live Music Month!

Live Music Month!

This Christmas, we've been on-air for a decade - and continuing our annual tradition it's Live Music Month!

In 2014, we continued to take the show on-the-road to some of the biggest events and most happening places in Herefordshire & Worcestershire.

This week, hear some of the performances we recorded at the Jailhouse in Hereford, Hatch Studios in Tenbury Wells, on stage at the Nozstock Festival, in Ledbury's Market Theatre and at BBC Maida Vale Studios.

Chikaya is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter from Hereford, singing everything from UK garage to funky house, hip hop to drum & bass and rock to reggae!

She says: "I'll get inspiration from the sky, the noises I can hear around me or by what individuals say to me.

"Singing is my passion - all I want is for people to enjoy listening to what I have to offer."

Chikaya is a play on words from her African surname.

A Worcester band has returned from a European tour, supporting the progressive rock group Magnum.

4-piece Ronin played a series of gigs in both Germany and The Netherlands in a variety of venues, including a disused warehouse.

We caught up with them on the continent!

The BBC Hereford & Worcester Musicians' Masterclass

The BBC Hereford & Worcester Musicians' Masterclass
As part of this year's Worcester Music Festival, we brought our ever-popular Musicians' Masterclass to The Hive in Worcester - putting together a panel of industry experts to answer those all important questions, such as:
  • How do I get signed?
  • Is there an easy way to land gigs in other areas?
  • How do I build a fanbase?
  • What's the best way to sell your music?

This week we take a variety of questions - at random - from the audience!

Answering those queries are Scott Garrett from MAS Records, Ella Nozworthy from the Nozstock Festival, Martin Chambers of The Pretenders, Nigel Clark of Dodgy and Verden Allen of Mott The Hoople.

Torched tour bus

Torched tour bus

A Worcestershire band are counting their losses after their tour bus was set on fire, with all of their equipment inside.

Johnny Kowalski & The Sexy Weirdos woke up on the weekend to find all of their drums, PA and merchandise gone - at an estimated value of £3000.

Following a successful European tour - the band decided not to renew their insurance until another road trip had been organised.

They are now relying on music sales and a series of local events to pay for new equipment.

BBC Introducing...in Redditch

BBC Introducing...in Redditch

Way back in the summer, when the festivals were all coming to an end, we put an appeal out online to music venues that would love to host one of our monthly recording sessions.

We were absolutely inundated - and this month we're coming from a cracking good venue in Redditch, which is so at the forefront of the music scene - they've just been featured on BBC Radio 1!

Death Or Glory records is situated at Church Green in the town centre and its owner, Steve Hadley, has set up his own recording studio, performance space, record label and music shop.

Stairway to Heaven

Stairway to Heaven

Every week, it seems there's a fresh story coming out about Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven.

First there was the rumour that Robert Plant torn up a massive contract asking the boys to get back together, which he rubbished - and then the whole lawsuit thing saying they stole the riff from another record.

The guys are all local and are arguably the most famous musicians we have from here - well, it's either them or Elgar, let's be honest!

We end tonight's show by listening to that almighty track - on vinyl - with an instrumental instrumentalist - Jimmy Page...

BBC Introducing in Leominster

BBC Introducing in Leominster
BBC Introducing in Hereford & Worcester supports unsigned, undiscovered and under-the-radar musicians from Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Since 2011, we've been taking the show out on-the-road showcasing the very best musicians from our two counties.

Our next recording session takes place on Sunday 4 January at The White Lion in Leominster and features four acts who we've been playing on BBC Hereford & Worcester recently.

It's free to get in - and this is your chance to see how we capture live music on tape, while being able to enjoy some of the hottest new acts we've got in our area right now.

None of these artists knew they were being considered for a live session - they were chosen based on the tracks they uploaded to us.

Artists chosen are Spirals from Leominster, Worcester's Graeme Spenser Hughes, Barefoot In Baltimore from Redditch and Hereford musician Thomas B.

Doors open at 6pm - but you're more than welcome to turn up anytime until 10pm.
